Okay this is possible through CSS, example:

.td_mod9.td_mod_no_thumb .item-details {
margin-left: 0px;
}

this will remove the margin of the containing div so that the post expands full width if you don’t set an image.

The problem with this is that sometimes I will get pictures, if only there was a way to detect that there is a picture available or not and then apply the CSS accordingly…

Yes we need a module to address this issue.
