Sorry for the delay replying – i didn’t get a notification.

Yes, It’s all the Newspaper plugings that deactivate when i update all my sites using the WordPress management feature from the Plesk control panel.

Forget about the Google thing, I understand how to stop that.

Theme panel setting

As you can see from the image, I have specified that the category be hidden from the front end, but it is still being shown.

But it isn’t hiding it from the front end. The categories are still clearly visible on posts. It isn’t working.

I got the child theme working, but it appears not to work for the mobile theme. Is this correct or could I be doing something wrong?

RochdaleHerald

Excellent, thank you! Works a treat.

That’s not good. We have over a thousand posts and the captions never used to appear under the featured images but now they do. Turning them off globally is not an option. I don’t suppose you can come up with an SQL query that will remove them from all images that appear as featured images but otherwise leave them alone?

They are ruining the appearance of our mobile site.

Great stuff. Thanks! Pagespeed has stopped moaning about the images now.

Which actually raises another question. Is there any way to obtain the unadulterated CSS files for the theme so that I can split out the critical, above the fold stuff and defer the rest? I have had some luck reverse-engineering it and managed to get the pagespeed score up from 70/100 to just over 90, but with a couple of minor glitches. removing the render-blocking CSS makes an astonishing difference.

OK I’ll just have to re-apply the fix after every theme update then. Is that the only place module mx8 is used or does it ever get rendered at a different size?

RochdaleHerald

Do I have to supply a new module template for module mx8 just to specify a thumbnail that fits?

RochdaleHerald

Thanks. I can see it’s easy to create a new thumbnail size, but how to attach it to a particular block in a particular location isn’t so obvious.

RochdaleHerald

A 324×160 thumbnail exists but it’s serving one at 695×385.

I’m fully aware of how to regenerate thumbnails, but that is if little use when the required thumbnail size isn’t called for by the theme. All of my thumbnails are present and correct, but in this instance the theme isn’t calling for an appropriate one.

That’s a bit of a blow. We have many existing users who have registered via the OneAll Social Login plugin. I really need to be able to incorporate the social login buttons on the login/register screen, otherwise those users will be locked out.

I’m aware of the reasons for the mobile theme not supporting widgets and shortcodes, but it des render blocks, which is why is like to include some below the post body. I’m not familiar with how the defaul styles applied in the theme panel are implemented. I had hoped that Composer would allow me to clone and modify them.

A few things seem to be hard coded into the theme, which does hamper customisation somewhat. Take for example the sharing buttons. There is no obvious way to add, for example, a “Reddit this” button without delving into code.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks Catalin.

If you login to http://rochdaleherald.co.uk with WordPress.com (or create an account) and email me you username I can give you admin privs. The ‘More News’ sidebar is temporarily disabled until I find a solution.

Thanks, but it was actually the ‘More posts’ popup that’s causing problems. for some reason it appears the wrong size on Firefox on my site (tried thre machines). It’s twice the size it should be and the close box is off the top of the screen so I can’t dismiss it.

Yep. Same here. wp-super-cache serves up the desktop theme to mobile users unles they are looged in, in which case it’s bypass know users option kick in. The inability to use widgets or shortcode embeds was the final show stopper for me as I use Social Login which requires those features. Short story – mobile theme won’t allow users to login with Facebook, Twitter etc.
