Thank you, I do understand that, what we are looking for is a custom solution. I am a developer and could customise it myself if you could offer some guidance on how best to achieve this or let me know what it would take to get this cusotmization built?

So, as in the picture above, for the block labelled ‘Travel to South Africa’ which displays posts and has the option to show posts by category we need to have an extra filter which shows posts by category AND custom taxonomy (‘Destinations’ – > ‘South Africa’)

Thank you for your reply. I see that you can add a custom post type to the filter but we need to add a custom taxonomy using the standard post type – ‘post’.

I was hoping for a different answer, 😉 but no worries.

You should consider to include hierarchical taxonomies in future versions, as I’m sure there would be many others who would love to have those, too. I’m sure that I’m not the only one who is frustrated building a site only on categories.

thanks for your reply. I was on holiday & offline, that’s why I only reply now.

To use your example, the author would submit a post & would choose a category (topic) “things to do” & add different tags “weekend getaways”.

But then the author would also have to choose the country where this post would be listed beneath “Europe -> Spain -> Barcelona”.

It would be a horrible user experience to use categories also for the countries, as it would then show countries & the topics in one list to choose from. That would create a big mess for the user.

The tags won’t work either, as it should have a parent menu (Europe & Spain) & it should be fixed, not a variable.

So I was thinking of adding a second “Categories” box. Another solution might be to use “Hierarchical Taxonomies”. Is that possible with the Newspaper theme?

Can hierarchical taxonomies be used with the News Paper theme for the main menu?

Can it be used in the “Appearance – Menus” section?

That was pretty much all clear. What I don’t see is, that a user can choose a specific page to submit the content to.

The pages shall be used to list the content of a destination.

Then the user as well chooses a category (sights, food, adventure). That’s easy, as it’s in the “add posts” widget.

But where can the user decide the main menu section?

It would make no sense to built everything with “categories”, as that would mean a huge mess of finding the right continent, country (worldwide) & then somewhere in between a topic (food, sights…).

Let’s say “Lifestyle” is a page & the “Travel” & “Recipes” in the sub-menu as well. How can the user choose to submit content for the one or other?

Each block on the frontpage should show the continents & in the block sub-menu should be shown the different topics.

I was thinking of working with tags, but it’s not working either.

The topics should be fixed. So users should not be able to add new ones. And when adding/choosing the topics, the user should have right away the complete overview of those.

Some topics might also got sub-topics like:

See/Do
– activities
– sights
– museums

Food
– street food
– restaurants

That’s why “categories” is useful for the topics.

Is it possible to have two separate widgets with categories? So that one would be for countries & the other for categories?

Or is it possible to use taxonomy with the News Paper theme to built this?
