Bad performance: How do we defer images - reply

Thank you. Many of these links helped.

One major bottleneck I feel are the images that are loaded in the sub-menu. Is it possible to defer the images unless visitor hovers over menu? There is no point loading 4-8 images in the header unless visitor wants to see them, as they are invisible.
