Your documentation shows that it is possible to edit the category layout and design.
The example shows options for Layout, sidebar position, Show featured slider, category color and category sidebar.
When I go to edit category via the admin panel or by clicking “edit category” on the frontend, I do not see these options. I only have the options Name, Slug, parent, description.
Do you think there is an incorrect setting applied somewhere, or is this a problem with the installation?

There is no more customizer for a long time. Everything is done through the theme panel. Please read the current documentation to see how you can set-up your theme.

I came to that page via a Google search and there is no version information on it, so there was nothing to indicate that it was outdated. Might I suggest that you edit the page to make this clear, and perhaps provide a link to the current docs? I wasted quite a bit of time trying to follow the outdated instructions.
I ought to add that Newspaper is an exceptionally good theme – thank you for creating it. It’s a pleasure to use and so easy to build a fantastic-looking website.
