Widgets got deactivated

I switched from 8.1 to 8.5 by uploading another folder via FTP. All widgets got deactivated.

I repeated the procedure by switching to 8.1, deleting the new 8.5 and then uploading the 8.5 in the 8.1 folder but the widgets are still missing.
Could you please help me?

This is, sadly, how WordPress works – when you upgrade to new theme, it disables the widgets as possibly being incompatible, since site would error if widgets included with one theme loaded without code from the prior theme. Normally, WP puts those at bottom of your widgets areas as “disabled” and you need to drag them back to the relevant sidebars.

I cannot drag’n’drop any widget at all since i don’t have the widget areas enabled. I cannot see them anymore, i just have the “Newspaper default” area and three footer areas.

Then you need to properly install theme. You upgrade theme by deleting old folder and uploading new one, not merging them. See the docs on how to upgrade.

In the doc it says to overwrite the files https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/.

I still have the problem, any ideas?

Hi,

The sidebars themselves should not be removed, only widgets from them may be placed in the inactive widgets section, from where they can be re-inserted in the existing sidebars

Please reinstall the theme again by FTP, check if this solves the issue. Remove the old theme folder and place the new theme, in the themes folder. Let us know the results.

Thanks

I’ve switched to Twenty Seventeen, then i manually removed the theme folder, reuploaded it and re-enabled.
Widget are still deactivated as you can see in this screenshot: https://ibb.co/ffDSWb

Hi,

You could recreate the sidebars and drag the inactive widgets in them. New sidebars can be created from many places
https://forum.tagdiv.com/sidebars-tutorial/
From what I know the sidebars should be inactive only if they were not used before, other then that only the widgets would be inactive.

Thanks
