Broken site after theme update. Version 8.8.1 to 11.5

Hello community!

I have version 8.8.1 of the Newspaper theme installed and wanted to update it to the latest version. I followed the instructions and did it via FTP https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/

The theme update went fine with no errors, but after the update the site was broken. The menu and footer were no longer visible. All styles had been removed even though I exported the theme preferences. The entire site had lost its settings, styles and seemed full of broken code. All plugins were up and running.

I had to restore a backup to be able to go back to the previous version and the site continued to work, but I need to update the theme. WordPress currently runs on version 6.0.

Could anyone tell me how to update the theme without losing the original site’s styles, menu and footer? https://www.edicionrural.com/

Thanks in advance for your help!

Natalia

Yep exactly same here (in my case upgrading from version 10.3.6.1); the menus, headers, and footers (and possibly more content?) is not carried over after updating the theme.

Have not figured out how to fix this yet without finding out a way to copy all those changes in the code and paste them after update of the theme.

Extremely disappointing, especially since the TD editor for posts is broken after WP 6.0, so I cannot make any changes to my site now unless I upgrade (and brake the whole site in the way described above).

Any help would be super appreciated!

UPDATE – I fixed it, remembering my own post from 2020:

TO FIX, TRY THIS:

From the WP menu, go to “Appearance” – “Themes”, and click “Activate” on another theme.
(Test that the other theme activates)

Then, “Activate” Newspaper again.

Try that,

Hello,

If you want to update the theme I recommend that you update the theme on a staging website and make sure that you have activated the tagDiv Standard pack, tagdiv composer plugin to keep the look of the website.
In the worst cases, the settings in the theme panel may be lost (there have been isolated cases), in these cases, after the theme plugins that were previously used are activated, you will have to use a backup for the theme panel -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/import-export-theme-settings/

Thank you!

Hello Ana Maria! thanks for your answer.

I did exactly what you say. I backed up the entire site and exported the settings as well. I did the update, reactivated all the plugins and imported the previously saved settings as you recommend but the whole site still broke. The header and footer were no longer visible. All styles had been lost.

Is there any other way to do it without losing all the styles? Could you help me with any other recommendations?

Thanks a lot!

I’ll try to do it that way, maybe I’ll have more luck! Thanks for the recommendation!

Hello,

Please provide some screenshots and a link to your website.

Thank you!

The site link is https://www.editionrural.com/

It currently works because I went back to the previous version of the theme with a backup that I created before the update.

In a few days I can try to do it again to see if it breaks again, but I have to wait until there is less traffic on the site.

Thanks for your help!
