Changed permalinks now get 404 error & megamenu not showing all categories

I am on WordPress 5.9.1 running Newspaper theme, using Google Cloud just the default wizard setup settings. I have been customizing my website and ran into two issues. I am posting about two problems in one thread by the way.

1) I changed my permalink settings to /%category%/%postname%/ and now all pages (posts and categories) give me a 404 error. How can I fix this but keep my permalink structure.
2) For some reason mega menu is not loading all categories. I have category mega menu set correctly, and my category structure correct. It displays some categories but not all sub categories. Not sure what I’m doing wrong!

Any help is appreciated !

Hello @sneakysnake!

I’ve tried to change the permalinks form Settings -> Permalinks and I have no such error there.
Usually is a warning there: Changing your permalinks settings can seriously impact your search engine visibility. It should almost never be done on a live website, please check this article: https://yoast.com/what-is-a-permalink/#utm_source=yoast-seo&utm_medium=software&utm_term=why-permalinks&utm_content=settings&php_version=8.1&platform=wordpress&platform_version=5.9.1&software=free&software_version=18.1&days_active=91-180

Thank you!

Thanks for the reply, the link you provided is just general knowledge on permalinks which I understand. This has to be a common issue, is there a fix after switching permalink structure to fix the 404 errors. Or per your article it suggests I use Yoast to setup a 301 redirect which doesn’t seem like the best solution. Any other fixes?

Hi sneakysnake,
Our theme is not interfering on the website permalinks, those are settings made by WordPress and seo plugins. Also, it is possible to have some code in .htaccess
Most of the time this situation can be fixed by renaming the .htaccess file and generate a new one by re-save the permalinks. Also here is a general guide -> https://www.fastcomet.com/kb/how-to-address-error-404-not-found-in-wordpress

Hello!

Make a test and deactivate ALL plugins except tagDiv ones, also if you are using a cache plugin, deactivate it, clear all cache and try again.
Check some other possible factors which can interfere in our theme: https://forum.tagdiv.com/general-options-may-interfere-newspaper-theme/

Let me know the results!

Thank you!
