Custom post types.

Hi!
I need to have different post types and i’m not sure if it would be sufficient to just place regular posts under a different category. If i would decide to use custom post types what would be the best solution and most compatible with your theme? Do i need to make changes in a functions.php in the child theme or perhaps a plugin?
