Hi
I am trying to get the Facebook Social Counter to work following the instructions here:

However the widget in visual composer doesn’t show the Facebook api fields, see here:
I am on what I believe is the latest version of both the theme (6.6.5) and the plugin (3.0) – neither say that they need updating.
Can you please let me know what else I need to do?

You have this problem because you do not have the latest version of Social Counter. As you can see in this screenshot -> http://screencast.com/t/S4aMi89w the latest version is 3.1 and not 3.0. Please try to update it and try again and see if your problem is still there.

Problem is that I am not offered any opportunity to update the plugin so I cannot update it to v3.1.

You will not have any notification in the panel as not using the latest version of the Social Counter because this plugin comes bundled with our theme and practically is not registered on WordPress. If you are the latest version of the theme, implicitly you have the latest version of our plugins that come with our theme in the folder that you have downloaded from Theme Forest. Simply disable and delete the social counter like this -> http://screencast.com/t/1sbjSXXx8wL and then instal from the panel Newspaper->Plugins like this -> http://screencast.com/t/AGsWbsej8bW

How long does it take for the changes to work? I updated the plugin about an hour ago and FB count still shows zero.

Exactly the same issue with me. I have your Newspaper6 on two pages and it doesn’t work on either of those.

Please make sure you have these requirements before further investigation is required:
1) Please make sure you have the latest theme version: 6.6.5. If not, you need to follow this guide to update your theme: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
2) Having the latest version of the theme is not enough if you do not update the social counter as well. You need to remove the current version you use: http://screencast.com/t/4jvRwNzK and then install the version of the plugin that comes with the 6.6.5 theme: http://screencast.com/t/9AKKURjTjX
You can recognize if you have the correct version of the plugin when you see the new app key settings: http://screencast.com/t/CIXxklBanNl If you do not have these settings in your social counter it means you do not have the correct version.
3)You need to follow this guide to get the requirements from facebook:

Please keep in mind that the social counter is not a live count. It will update once every few hours.
Once you followed all the above steps properly and made sure you have not missed anything, (and the social counter still does not work), then you can send an email to contact@tagdiv.com with your login information so we can further inspect the issue.

To answer my own question the change doesn’t take effect immediately and the count was still showing as zero several hours later. However, I left it overnight and now it is working. So if you have followed all the steps then it does seem to work, eventually.
One final question – how will I know when there is a plugin update if it doesn’t ever say?

When there is a new version for our tested plugin, we do some deep investigation and check if this kind of new version works properly with our theme and otherwise we will try to adjust this to our theme and because of this it is necessary sometimes until release this. So, on one page, that was updated to to Newspaper 6.6.5 Which I updated yesterday and reinsalled Socialcounter, it took overnight to start working.
On other page, where 6.6.5 is installed for several weeks with the Social counter plugin updated, it doesn’t work. I have reinstalled Social counter today and still nothing.
