is there a way to modify how a featured image is cropped on a case-by-case basis? Sometimes the auto crop is okay, but other times it crops the image totally wrong, especially concerning the thumbnails on the front page.

Where you upload the image in Media, there is a setting with the size of the image and please select full size.

After activating the thumbnail sizes you need to regenerate your thumbnails using a plugin. Check this: https://forum.tagdiv.com/using-the-theme-with-existing-content/

I think you misunderstood, how do I for a single posting change the featured image/thumbnail crop? Not for all the featured images and thumbnails, just for 1 post.

Unfortunately, our theme do not have an option to change the crop by cases. The crop is set for top center https://forum.tagdiv.com/featured-image/

Also, using this method, maybe you need to regenerate some thumbs for that image to apply it (remove the old thumb and use the cut one).
