I just changed to the Newspaper theme for my site http://elevatingsound.com.
All the posts now show two of the same image.

If deleting ‘featured image’ then there is only one image showing in the post, but leaving the problem of not having a thumbnail/featured image anymore.

How do I solve this?
I also have a conflict between the Shareaholic plugin and the social buttons included in the theme. How can I remove your buttons, leaving me only with the ones from Shareaholic?

I have checked your website and I saw your twice images. You have this behaviour because your content begins with the same images that is set as featured image and the template displays automatically on the top of your post the featured image. I suggest you use other post templates that will no load the featured image on the top, like post template style 5.

If I would like to keep the current post template, then I can manually just delete the top image in each post while retaining the featured image?
If I wish to keep the post template as currently shows on http://elevatingsound.com, what image size should I use for the featured image if I would like for the image to show up as the full breadth of the post area?

Yes, if you want to avoid the duplicity, you will have to erase the image from the top of your post. As references, please check this list here -> http://screencast.com/t/QZJlizd0 and there you can see all the thumbnails sizes for all elements from the theme.
If you want to disable the social sharing buttons from each post, you can do that from Theme panel, like this -> http://screencast.com/t/2FAoJx3ySOOw

In terms of image size, which image size for the posts would you recommend if I want the image to cover the full width of the content area of the post. I.e. what is the pixel breadth och the post content area if wanting to use the width that is combined with a right-hand sidebar? I don’t want the post image to cover the content area + sidebar width, but just the width where the post text is placed.

Please check the following screenshots and there you can find the width of the site when you have the right sidebar and you can use this kind of width for your featured image.
