I would like the default image displayed in the blocks to be the first image in a post if a featured image is not present. Can this be set? At the moment it only uses the featured image. Thanks for any help with this.

Hi,
The thumbnails displayed on blocks are created from set featured images. There are plugins maybe that can take the first image from the posts and use that as featured. You could search for a some plugins that have this capability, and try them. Also search the forum for similar topics

The plugin recommended is not tested, but it seems to work for other users with the same situation.
