Will the script for older versions work for 3.8? Should I update to 4 first (if so where can I download it).

Hello Miriam,
We have not tested if it will work, as version 3.8 is a bit old and we only tested updating from version 4.
You could try to update to 4 and then follow our update guide(make sure to back-up), but our suggestion is to delete the old version, install the new one, and rebuild your site without using the script.
Newspaper 6 is a whole new theme that is released for free for all of our existing customers so an update to version 6 may cause the same issues as switching to another theme (but we did try to maintain compatibility where ever possible).
Always make a full backup of your current installation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups and then do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ also update the plugins that come with the theme files from the /plugins folder. Also you have to update the child theme if you use it, please note that old files customization or custom css will not work with the new version and you will have to adjust and re-add them.
Bottom line is that newspaper 6 is a whole new theme built from scratch.

Well, thank you for writing such a good update script!
I made a duplicate site since it was going to be so hard to rebuild the site with a new theme. Then having built the copy of the site and imported the old database, I thought, why not give the updtae script a go.
The bad thing was that when I imported the database to the duplicate siteI did not change the site url. Dumb mistake. So when I told the update script to make its changes I was in fact on the live site not the duplicate.
The good news was that the script worked. Well done.
I had to open each page and change the template, I had to put widgets back in a few sidebars. In 10 minutes I had the site working again.

So for anyone else:
The update script works for update from version 3.8 to 6.
My site only had about 10 pages
Posts on my site all looked much the same.
I had some custom css for integrating plugins to the theme.
In other words my site was not doing anything dramatic or different.
Pages need their template choices checked/redone.
Widgets in sidebars need to be reset, 3rd party plugins will be missing.
Custom css needs to be copied over as well I guess.
