I know the IG component in the footer is not a live widget – is there anyway to force an update to the server as it is a bit frustrating having delayed content to a few times a day in the year 2018 🙂

Hi,
Indeed, there is a built in cache limiting Instagram updates to an interval of 3 hours. There is no option to disable this caching unless you remove it from the theme code

Also there is an issue currently with the Instagram functionality, they made some changes on their part. We are working to fix the issue as soon as possible.

Ok where do we get the updates for the IG if it is working again?
How can I update the theme to the newest version without loosing anything?
Please edit the td_instagram.php file from the theme files

This should fix the Instagram widget issues, please try it and let us know. Clear the cache and CDN files if needed after editing the file.
Nothing from Instagram shows at all except the header to follow…

Same issue on both Safari and Chrome-so it is not a cache issue as I have not used Safari to view the URL before

Just one more thing, the footer is working again, but not the social counter widget, it doesn`t update the follower count
Just to confirm: indeed the social counter widget doesn’t work for Instagram on my part either.

Try the mentioned modification in the plugin and it should work properly. Bot these fixes will be included in the next theme update.
