Migrating from Very Old Newspaper version to Current One

Hi,

We have a site that is running a very old version of Newspaper (3.9.1) and would like to update it to 8.6. The site breaks if we try to migrate directly, but we’re wondering if there is a different migration path (for example, are there old intermediate versions we can use to do the migration)?

Thanks!

Hello frankcf,

In order to achieve the best results after you will install the latest update you have to follow some rigorous steps like this -> you have to delete both of your themes, child theme, and main theme. All your customizations from your Newspaper 3.9.1 theme will do not work because all the files from this were changed in Newspaper 8.6 or 8.7.1 (latest update) and as the main theme and also you lose all changes.

The Newspaper 8.7.1 is a whole new theme so an update from 3.9.1 to 8.7.1 may cause the same issues as switching to another theme (but we did try to maintain compatibility where ever possible).

Always make a full backup of your current installation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups and then do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ update also the plugins that come bundled with the theme files from the /plugins folder.

The shortcodes have been changed so old ones will not work anymore. Please note that old files customization or custom CSS will not work with the new version and you will have to adjust or re-add them.

Bottom line is that newspaper 8.7.1 is a whole new theme built from scratch.
Unfortunately, you will have to clear your agenda and spare a bit of time to adjust all your settings to the new version of the theme.

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes!

Thank you for the message!

That’s what I was afraid of. If I wanted to do a totally fresh install and move my old posts (and media) over to a new site, is there a recommended procedure?

Hello frankcf,

Above you should find the recommended procedure. Basically, you should start making (recreate) your website from scratch. In the future, please notice that you should keep up the steps with the theme updates if you want to achieve best theme results. Until now, why do you have not updated the theme? These are the consequences, sorry.

Thanks.

That is why I was asking for the older Newspaper versions. So I can do the transitions. Do you have the older versions?

Hello frankcf,

We cannot provide an older version of the theme than at 7. If you want to receive this you should contact us via email at contact@tagdiv.com and there we can provide this version of the theme. Also, we recommend updating the theme to the latest version of it.

Thanks for the message!
