new to newspaper – enabling sidebar

hiya,

I’m new to this theme and having an issue with sidebar.

I’m wishing to introduce a standard sidebar (not smart sidebar) to my website.

Sidebar is enable on the template settings in the theme panel.

However, when i go to the widgets section in wordpress there is no sidebar to drop items into.

I can see that when i am using tagdiv composer there is a “widget sidebar” option however i cant see how to actually put that in the right hand column in the composer. It always seems to only want to go in a row.

what am i doing wrong, i am wishing to have a sidebar displaying on the website with various items within it such as the social counter, most popular categories etc etc

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi,

You must first create sidebars, they will then appear in the widgets section. Sidebars can be created from multiple places
https://forum.tagdiv.com/sidebars-tutorial/
These can then be used on posts, category pages, or as you mention on pages using the Widgets sidebar element. Using the composer simply drag the elements in the location you want, then select from your available sidebars

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks

Hi, thanks for your reply.

sidebars are enabled on my templates so ready to go. (however i dont see sidebars when going to the widgets section of the regular wordpress panel – is this a problem?)

starting with my website homepage, i would first need to create a 2/3, 1/3 look to enable the sidebar to go into the right hand side 1/3?

I can see the widget sidebar option when using the composer. So i would ddrag that into the right hand side 1/3 space first yeah? and then populate the sidebar with the various things i want such as social counter, popular articles etc etc?

So you have created sidebars like shown above, and they are not appearing in the widgets section.

I have tested this myself, first I created a sidebar here for example
https://www.screencast.com/t/XU3aayWpTwn
This sidebar appears in widgets and I can add content to it
https://www.screencast.com/t/a31c9syf
Now it can be selected in any place where you want it to display, for example in the composer
https://www.screencast.com/t/bfkMNerAIx

When using the composer you can also simply split the row as you mention and the sidebar would be considered the 1/3 column. Then drag items in it. An advantage of having widget sidebars would be that you can simply select a predefined sidebar and use it multiple times.

If you already tried this and with no results, then there is a problem. The first step would be to deactivate all plugins except theme plugins. Usually plugins are causing issues. Then try again to create a sidebar and set it. Let us know the results.

Thanks

Hi simion,

Thanks for your help with this, i think i’m almost there, but have one questionn.

in your explanation above you state

I have tested this myself, first I created a sidebar here for example

I had a look at that screenshot you created. and ive visited my newspaper theme panel and i cant seem to find a screen that looks exactly the same as yours.

newspaper – theme panel

i visited

template settings => blog and posts template

and also

post settings => default post template (site wide)

neither of the above two look like the one in your screenshot.

Which particular area of the theme panel were you on when you did your screenshot?
