Newsmag errors during activation

Trying to install Newsmag, but when I go to Live Preview I just get a spinning wheel (loading) icon. If I try to activate it, I get this error message:
The request was not completed. The server met an unexpected condition.

Things I’ve tried
downloaded a new zip file of just the theme
uploaded the theme directly via ftp
deleted and re-installed the theme several times
deactivated all plugins

just to clarify, that by activating the theme i do not mean putting in my license code. i can’t get the theme to load and it throws a server error. i’ve tried deactivating all plugins and am running the most current version of wp

Please make sure that you install the theme according with our guide: https://forum.tagdiv.com/installation-newsmag/ Note that you need to unzip the folder downloaded from themeforest and upload the Newsmag.zip file from: Newsmag-tf.zip\Newsmag-tf Also you need to update the plugins from /plugins path. Before the update process make sure you deactivate all plugins and clear all caches.

This could also happen due to your server configuration, so if the process fails again you should also contact your host provider and let him know about this.

if i had installed it incorrectly, then it would not show up as a theme in WordPress. i have been running this site using Magazinly, and it worked fine with 2 other themes as well, so don’t think it is a problem with the server. the only theme that throws this error is Newsmag.

This is very often caused by improperly coded scripts which run requests in a recursive manner filling all available slots. Usually the developers should be able to look into this and rectify the problematic code.

Did you also increase the default memory allocated to WordPress in your wp-config.php file ? Visual Composer uses a lot of memory, and the default 40MB not enough. This is a very common issue with themes using VC, so something to try first if you had not already increased to 96MB or more (pref 128MB).

yes. i increased it to 128mb

i think i may have it solved. i had to force it to php 5.4

is that normally a requirement?
