Newspaper crashed site with VisualComposer upgrade

Hi there,

since trying to update my site with the latest version of VisualComposer, my site renders redundant and returns an HTTP Server 500 error. The only way I can revert is to switch themes.

Be sure to delete the old folder via FTP first, then upload the latest version of js_composer included with the version of theme you’re updating.

yep, tried that – still wipes my site out.

Try turning off all other plugins, make sure you have enough memory allocated to wordpress. Default is not enough for vc.

thanks Chris – I’ve tried that. As soon as VisualComposer is activated, the site disappears and I get the 500 error and can’t access the site again. Only way is to FTP in and delete the JS_Composer folder to get the site back responding.

I tried installing the JS composer the way you suggested, as soon as I do – I lose access to the site again.
So I then have to remove the JS_Composer directory to get back into the site.

I did also increase WP memory limit and php memory as well.

It was all working fine previously until I did an update via WordPress update panel on Sunday.

Okay….
here’s one of my ‘top tips’ …

a) after you disable and remove js_composer
b) use wp-optimize and delete all ‘transients’
c) reinstall js_composer

I had one site where this happened to me last year, and it was a fluster cluck, to put it politely … ended up having to do the plugin folder “reset” trick …
which you might also try …

via FTP, rename your plugin folder, login to your WP panel … log out, go back and name the plugin folder back to plugins

thanks Chris – I did a restore from backup which got the site up and running again

which was fine for a few days – now I can’t login to the site – the site is still up -but when I try to login I get a server 500 error.

I haven’t changed a thing since the restore.

So what do your error logs say?

Server out of memory, CPU overloaded ?

Try further optimizations that can overload site
a) disable all pings/ XML-RPC
b) disable visual composer, and use the SHIM plugin from Radu (see my optimization thread and archives); disable loading VC on post pages
c) make sure you have plenty of RAM allocated to WP (e.g., big site, 256M vs 40M makes huge diff)
d) make sure you have system in place to stop overloads from bots, like the limit login attempts plugin that blocks IPs from bots trying to guess password for admin
e) [ etc ]
