My test page using newspaper demo template shows terribly slow speed on google page speed test. I have read https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-make-the-site-faster/ and done a few things but it doesn’t really seem to help. my question is, which steps out of total six shown on the above link are essential (I mean most crucial) to increase the speed? (and don’t say all are essential :-)). FYI, I already have changed our website to a better/faster hosting plan.

Basically every step in that guide is important and helps performance issues. The most crucial ones are image optimization, gzip compression, move render blocks to footer using the speedbooster plugin and using a caching plugin.
You need to read and follow the instructions in the guide to increase loading speeds. This however requires a bit of work on your part. You will need to do a bit of reading on these subject to better understand why these are necessary.

I saw significant change in the google page speed insight after I figured out that my Gzip compression was not turned on although a test showed it was on. As soon as I turned it on, the speed went up significantly, to 80+. But on mobile sites it’s still hovering around 50.
I have noted that turning off the Unique articles feature helps the speed go up (makes sense to me) but it’s an important feature for us.
My question is, if I turn off Unique articles and instead use the Offset post feature, will it help increase the page speed or will it be the same if I apply it throughout the page? In other words, my question is, if by using the Offset feature instead of Unique articles, if the visible result on the homepage is as good as it would be using the Unique articles, will it make any improvement in the page loading time?

Please notice that the Unique Articles use the offset. Practically, is the same thing and should not influence the page speed. The Unique articles add automatically the offset and this feature was implemented to help the customer’s work in this regard. You can test this and check the results.

I understand it, Catalin. Thanks for the clarification. So the only thing I can now think of improving is, eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS in above-the-fold content, Leverage browser caching, Minify CSS and JavaScript.
Just to get your opinion- WPMUDEV has released what they call Hummingbird plugin, which supposedly takes care of this stuff. Do you think it’s safe to use it with this theme?
Since I mentioned Hummingbird, i also would like to mention that there also are some free alternatives to achieve similar results. I have not used any of them so would appreciate your opinion.
