PHP 8 Compatibility issue

Hello Team,

I have been using NewsPaper latest, Cloudflare and WP Rocket. It’s working great and superfast.

I upgraded the PHP from 7.4 to 8 then the initial server response was too slow. The PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix scores were also reduced.

I have been using Hostgator which is fine.

Because of the issue, I coordinated with Hostgator and downgraded to PHP 7.4. The performance is back to normal, which is 100% (Mobile and Desktop).

May I know what could be the problem? Newspaper theme fully supported PHP 8.0?

Thank you for your reply.

Hostgator is asking me to check with the theme provider & plugins and you are asking me to check with hostgator 🙂 .

I don’t have many plugins, since I hate to have more plugins.

I have only 13 plugins which including newspaper plugins 6 nos.

I had the Post Revisions plugin which didn’t get updated for the last 4 years, so I have deleted it now.

The rest of them are having regular updates.

Yes I understand that PHP 8 will be faster, that is the reason I updated but not sure why its affecting performance.

May I know anyother options to check the root cause of the slowness? I will try other possibilities as well.

One more question, how long Newspaper theme will support PHP 7.4?

I’m writing jus for my passion and am not interested to earn also. So I don’t have staging server kinds of options.

As I mentioned before, I have deleted Post Revisions plugin and planning to remove two more plugins.

Once I have completed it, then will try again with PHP 8. If I’m facing the problem again and will come to you.

If possible, let me know how to proceed.

If PHP 7.4 will be supported for a longer period then I will stay with this version since without PHP 8 itself my site is superfast.

In the meantime, the issue may be solved by plugins or Hostgator 🙂 . The only thing I wanted was to get the benefits of PHP 8.

My site address is https://www.giriblog.com, and I am using WP Rocket which is an amazing result.

I’m using a shared server only not a powerful server like VPS but with Newspaper theme and WP rocket helped me to get a fantastic score.

The Newspaper and WP rocket performance is too good. Once all issues are settled, will write about it so others also will get the benefit.

Hello Calin,

After I upgraded to WordPress version 6.0, I wanted to test PHP 8 again. Now the issue is resolved 🙂 .

Now my site is running with PHP version 8.0.25.

I’m not sure, if this is the reason for PHP 8 compatibility issue, but somehow the issue got resolved after WP upgrade.

After PHP 8 the performance bit improved. Overall, my site https://www.giriblog.com/ performance is too good.

Once all settled, will write a post on how the NewsPaper theme and WP rocket helped me to get 100% results in PageInsights.

Pls note, I have only 6 plugins excluding NewsPaper plugins.

Hello Calin,

I have settled with Gutenberg and all my articles are customized based on this editor. As well, soon WP is going to decommission the Classic editor.

So it’s not sensible to go back to Classic editor. Hence, I will stay with Gutenberg hereafter.

I request your development team consider the changes and work on the same. The issue is not only for me but for those who are using Gutenberg.

The issue was reported on December 2020 and now December 2022 but no action on it.

Hope you will understand how we are patiently waiting.

Pls fix the issue on Gutenberg.
