I use a plugin for pop-up images in posts (gallery, images with a link). But, does the theme have support for pop-ups without plugins and how do I set it up?

Strange! Please deactivate ALL plugins except tagDiv ones, also if you are using a cache plugin, deactivate it, clear all cache and try again.

Well, it works for single images, but this option is not available for gallery images.
How do I set the gallery to pop up images when a user clicks on a small image in the gallery? Now opens the full size image in a new page.

A workaround there could be to use the TagDiv Slide Gallery: https://forum.tagdiv.com/gallery-2/
And set the captions to every image in the Media Library.

I have a lot of material that was made by the standard gallery from Gutenberg and now it doesn’t work in this new Newspaper theme. This would be a very serious note for anyone moving an existing site with a large archive. It takes a long time to move all posts to tagDiv Slide Galler.
It would be good to find a way how to use LightBox option in Gallery created by default Gutenberg element and enable pop up images?
BTW, In wordpress I don’t have option which can be seen in the video: Gallery Type (to select TagDiv Slide Gallery).

In example https://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper_history/ there is no gallery to see.
Please, try to add gallery and play with columns. First, all the images will be large, and then when the number of columns changes, all the images will be small, but again one below the other.
PS. Without LightBox everything works fine, but without pop-ups!!!

Please, try with prebuilt website L’histoire. It would be good to look at a gallery with LightBox. There is a problem with that theme.

Did you notice a problem?
The look of the gallery changes when you add LightBox and something is not working properly. When you click on an image, a small image appears in your example – but a large image should pop up when it work correct!!!
If that worked well: when Lightbos is added, the look of the gallery should not change, and the images from the gallery should be pop-ups. That’s what I’m trying to get.
