I have noticed that the base css file in the theme is 1.1 MB which seems rater large, given my site doesn’t use all the different options. Is there a way to reduce the CSS file to only contain the styles and layouts I actually use?

Unfortunately you cannot remove anything from the CSS files. If you are experiencing rather low speed you can make sure that all of our theme requirements are up to date as you can see here: https://forum.tagdiv.com/requirements-for-newspaper/
