Site Speed: Home Page Images NOT scaling.

I ran GTMetrix report for my site

Site is loading at 5 seconds (71 requests).
Should be around 2.5 seconds.
The big issue for site speed seems to be home page is loading full size images and NOT scaled images to fit.

EXAMPLE: https://www.veteranstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/SPV_Germany-FM.jpeg is resized in HTML or CSS from 1600×1045 to 218×142. Serving a scaled image could save 51.2KiB (98% reduction).

We have same problem on article pages too.

Do I have some theme/server/css setting off?
Or is this a known theme bug?

Unfortunately, the theme cannot perform this operation.
You need to use the Force Regenerate Thumbnails plugin to regenerate all thumbs.

Hum? I have 4 years worth of images (2015-2019). Each year is about 2gb.
I reviewed the plugin, seems like that will take a very long time to do the task.
Do you know of any way to just focus on 2019?

I see that I can do it using MEDIA LIBRARY. Will try that. My hope is that my home page will load faster. Still, don’t understand why theme is not generating this… is it a bug? Bad design? Or is something on my server/css/site theme settings wrong?

OK, so used the PLUGIN recommended. It did the job. Home page now using thumbnails and not trying to use the original HUGE image.

So I really don’t understand how this all works

Do I need to keep this plugin enabled so that it always makes thumbnails for this theme? OR is Theme supposed to make thumbnails and I need to fix it or adjust setting somewhere?

I installed “Force Regenerate Thumbnails” plugin
I ran it to make thumbnails for the last 60 images
It appears it “solved” the home page image problem
New posts with new images seem to be creating thumbnails. I don’t know if that’s the plugin or something else. I don’t know how or why it works.
Site speed went from 5 seconds to 3.5 seconds
