Can’t find much information on this issue. I created a tagdiv slide gallery published the post with the size set to “thumbnail”, then realizing I wanted the photos full size went back and changed it to full size and updated it. The photos were still cropped strange. I tried regenerating thumbnails but that still hasn’t fixed it.
Not sure where to go from here or if I need to give any more information.

By removing the sidebar I was able to get the images to display somewhat better.

I was able to go into the inspector and see that the images src urls are being changed by adding new dimensions like “1068×580” or “140×420” depending on the sidebar or not. When removing those dimensions and just using the standard src url the pictures look perfect (as is the case of the first screenshot) but I am only able to do that within the inspector and not able to make it permanent.

Check the theme panel and see if you have the thumbnail sizes required for the gallery enabled. The images should not display like that, maybe something is interfering with the gallery. It would be very helpful if you could provide a link to this gallery so I can inspect it.
You could try to disable all your plugins except the ones bundled with the theme, clear any caching installed on your website, then check to see if this has any effect.

The images you use seem to be portrait oriented and this is how they will be displayed in the gallery. The theme uses the center-top cropping system and that is why they look like this

There is no option to disable the crop only for the gallery. Unfortunately it all depends on the images used. The cropping system ensures the best overall result, that means that some image formats or aspect ratios may not provide the best results. The gallery simply displays the previously created image thumb size, from the images you use, in both the cases with or without sidebar.

I guess I am confused. Why does the sidebar, when enabled, crop all images to the portrait style? Also, is there a recommended size so that the images display at full resolution on the slideshow preview?

That happens because of the width available. When a sidebar is used the post content is smaller, and therefore uses a smaller image size or thumbnail. With no sidebar the post content can use all the available space and display the content differently. This affects the post content elements like the gallery for example. And the images used also influence the result.
If the gallery does not provide the results you want, you could search for a gallery plugin that maybe has more settings and options, that you can use to style it the way you want.
