I had decided to disable basically all plugins besides the TagDiv Composer one.

You should try to re-install the theme via FTP way, make sure that you have updated it and all of the required plugins which come bundled with the theme packet, clear all the caches and check the results.

Everyone is having a problem with this plugin who have updated to WordPress 4.9.8 The plugin needs to be made compatible. Same issue here with the TD Composer theme.

Editing the .htaccess did help the problem though my site still feels super sluggish.

@Thakksy What is the problem you are facing exactly? In our tests the composer works properly with the WordPress latest update.
Please try the same as kytmagic did, that is specified in the requirements guide as a fix for some issues, in some cases
