Thumbnails will be cropped, not scaled. The theme uses a center top cropping

Each module (modules form blocks and grids) has a required thumbnail size

Depending on the image you use, the module you use, the results will be different

If no module displays the images you use currently properly, maybe try and use different aspect ratio original images and make tests.
Flex blocks allow a degree of thumbnail modification, experiment with them as well
