I followed the instructions for updating from version 4 to 6. It didn’t work. Luckily I set up a staging site to do this update. It’s completely broken though. Whenever I disable the child theme and activate the main theme it looks fine but obviously none of my content is there. I need help with this.
You have to fully update the child theme as well, which will over-ride changes. You will need to re-apply all changes to *new* child theme. This is major theme update/UPGRADE — like a NEW theme — not a dot revision.
Content (posts/pages) not impacted by change as those are in your dbase, not in the theme.
“Layouts” and customizations, menus, sidebars will need to be reset/refreshed.

Please note that in version 6 any customization(to the theme files, custom css) from old version will not work and you will have to re-add them as Newspaper 6 is practically a new theme. In the “how to update” guide is specified you need to run the script that will import from database your settings, will change the shortcodes. Unfortunately you will have to re-add your widgets in the sidebars as some of them may not be imported or don’t exist anymore, also they will become inactive.
