Update Newspaper question

I got this e-mail a few days ago and I have a question about it:

We’d like to let you know that an update to your item Newspaper by tagDiv is now available in your Downloads page.
Remember: you need to be logged in to download the update.

Can I just download it like last time and install it on WordPress and nothing will be deleted from all of my work till now? I have no idea how I should update it. Can someone explain how it works and most important if there are any dangers in losing all the progress I made till now.

Wow, that really looks like a lot of things can go wrong?

I dont eve know what this means: Do not keep older copies of the theme inside wordpress themes folder

I see 3 different options and ways how to update it. What is the best way to update it with the least risk?

Hi,

The best way with the least risk is to make a back-up beforehand and update using the ftp method.

Thank you!

I don;t understand the ftp method and the video is also very bad. In the video what should i type in at 0:18? I dont know what ftp is and all of that kind. And when he is done witht aht you click cancel???

Could you explain it to me, because I dont follow it at all…maybe make the video better for people that aren’t that good with computers?

Hello,

FTP is simple. You just copy and paste files. If you know how to copy and paste, you know ftp. Simply use a ftp client or your cpanel the host provides (they usually have ftp tools) then access the wordpress files and look for the theme in wp-content/themes/ Delete the newspaper theme from there and copy and paste the new theme version (you download it from envato) in that folder. It’s the most basic thing there can be on a computer.

Thank you!

Hahahaha it still sounds hard XD. The video just doesn’t match with what I am seeing, but nevermind though. I did the automatic way and now I have this button ready, but I had a feq short questions about that:

– Does it delete my CSS code? That way I can just copy it and paste it after the update.
– How long does it take, because I tried it when I was in the library and it was taking a very long time. I decided to go to the dashboard and see the update button again and I had to do it all over again. If I know how long it takes on a average I can know when something is wrong when it takes too much time.

Hi,

If your css is stored in Theme Panel -> Custom Code -> Custom CSS, it won’t be lost.
No settings made in Theme Panel or on Posts, Pages, etc. won’t be lost.
The update rewrites the theme files and only the custom modifications made on the theme files will be affected. If you didn’t made any modifications on the theme files, you don’t have to worry.

If you find it hard to update via ftp, there’s an easier method:
– From wp-admin Appearance, just switch the theme to Twenty Sixteen (or any other theme you may have) – http://screencast.com/t/pUsPQIhxy
– from the same area, delete Newspaper – http://screencast.com/t/s4KkeByP9efWhttp://screencast.com/t/fGhkkbzJK9xz
– next press on Add New http://screencast.com/t/5RtxCpQvuDy – Upload Theme – and install the theme latest version – http://screencast.com/t/tS8ssTmOkXJb
– activate the theme

Wordpress (and we) recommends that before doing any update to it’s core or update to themes or plugins, to backup your site. More details can be found on their documentation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups

Thank you!
