Upgrade to v7.4 Fails

Hi, I just upgraded from Newspaper v6.6 to v7.4. Everything was working fine before the upgrade but after it finished the home page was replaced by a message which said…

Fatal error: Call to undefined function vc_shortcode_custom_css_has_property() in /var/sites/f/frockmagazine.com/public_html/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/vc_templates/vc_row.php on line 55

I thought I could comment that line out to see if that would fix the problem but then a different error appeared…

Fatal error: Call to undefined function vc_shortcode_custom_css_has_property() in /var/sites/f/frockmagazine.com/public_html/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/vc_templates/vc_column.php on line 41

…so I reinstated our last good backup to get the site back on air.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Katie

Hi K,
This error is from Visual Composer.
¿When you made theme update you upgrade also the Visual Composer plugin bundled with the theme (v4.12.1)?

Hi

Thanks @nairolf for your help!

@katie
please check our documentation for more detail about the update process for Visual Composer plugin: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-visual-composer-plugin/

Let us know if you need further assistance on this!
Thanks!

Thanks Andrei and Nairolf. I have followed the instructions and have successfully upgraded Visual Composer to the current version.

However, I’m now seeing a nag message near the top of the screen asking me to ‘activate’ my copy of Visual Composer, even though it is already activated. Please take a look at this screenshot –

What should I do about that?

Also, will it now be safe to use the Envato Tolkit (in the same screenshot) to update the Newspaper theme automatically or will that overwrite the Visual Composer update I have just installed?

Thanks, Katie

Hi again Katie,

About that message from Visual Composer: completely get rid of them, very soon tagDiv are going to do something to inform new users about that.

You and all of us we are using a copy from Visual Composer, with every update tagDiv also updated the plugin to the current version but in some case this plugin is updated more often, that’s why you receive that notification.
Don’t worry, in the next update of theme you’ll have that version.

Never use Envato Toolkit or other tool, search in this forum how make update through FTP

Thanks Nairolf. One more question before I do the upgrade…

If I upgrade now using the FTP method, from version 6.6 to v7.4, will we lose all the various settings we have already made? There are hundreds of settings in the Newspaper theme and it took us weeks to get them all right. I would hate to have to start all over again.

Thanks, Katie

Be sure to ‘export’ your settings from the theme panel for safe keeping, as well as dbase backup, for safety.

Hi again @katie,

Like say @chris, allways you have to do backups for all stuff.

Any settings made in theme (settings panel) will not be lost.
Quick explanation: your theme is only a skin for your web, so all settings / posts / comments / etc. are stored into DB (data base)

Warning: if you are made some changes into style.css ore any other file that come with theme, YES, you’re going to lose them.

Thanks everyone.
