I’ve optimized my site images using, as you suggest, EWWW: it works perfecty for images but non for thumbs on block, and when images are used as background: .webp files are present but Newspaper uses the jpeg/png version.
I remember that somewhere in Theme Panel I saw that option
USE WEBP FORMAT
Enable or disable loading WebP images. Important: the theme will not create WebP images format, but will load them on blocks if they exist on your server.
but I’m not able to find that option anymore: did you delete it? Could you please help me?
About the method to deliver webp images, what option of EWW do you suggest? Both .htaccess rules and JS WebP Rewriting are working. And if I’ll be able to enable the USE WEBP FORMAT Newspaper option, what of those three method do you suggest.

Sorry to bother you again, but our graphic people have created some content using single background image, and I have verified that, using EWWW’s javascript method as you suggested, the webp images are not used for those content.
I don’t know or see if there is a setting to define it like for thumbs on module/block.
Also, I know this is not your product, but do you happen to know if there is a way to have webp also used in images inserted in revolution sliders without having to reload them directly with webp extension?

The theme will not create Webp images but will load them on BLOCKS if they exist on your server. This is written to that setting from the theme panel settings.
If you want to use Webp images in the Revolution Slider, try using Webp images that you have in the Media Library. Check this guide: https://www.sliderrevolution.com/faq/how-to-use-webp-images-in-slider-revolution/

Sorry again, but something doesn’t add up.
I am sending you two screenshots of a site, the home page and an internal page, with the Chrome console screenshot as well.
In the first case, I see multiple webp images from the console because multiple Flex Block and/or Flex Block Builder type blocks are used.
In the second case, there is only one webp from console, that of the logo, while the other two, which are served as normal jpgs, are in a Single background image and a CPT Bg featured image.The webp images exist, were correctly generated by EWWW, and are reasonably smaller than the original.
It seems to me that Newspaper’s webp replacement is only done for blocks, not for other types of elements such as those reported above.
Is this correct?
If so, is there a way to replace webp images for those blocks as well?
