I seem to be unable to change the footer of the websites as I may have deleted the predefined contents in the widgets area, thus unable to edit the necessary area. As shown in the images below, the widget area of footer 1,2 and 3 is empty, however, if I do add widgets in the area, it would only populate below the predefined contents of the footer. (Editor picks / Popular posts / Popular categories)

The footer predefined content is part of the footer template you choose. If you want to remove the footer content you will have to change the footer style to an empty one from the theme panel: https://www.screencast.com/t/0CGv3f1M
