Found the problem and also the solution.

The top menu had categories setup as mega menus.

The mega menus did not work on the site so we never knew they were there. We always saw text links for categories in the top menu.

The mega menu option was turned on in the Menu section in Wp Admin. That was creating tons of H3 headings in the code but these were not shown to the user. (because for some reason mega menu did not work on the front end.)

Disabling mega menu option for every category link in the menu removed all the h3 headings that were showing up in the code but not showing up for the user.

I think you’re not getting the message I want to convey.

On our website the theme is inserting h3 but those h3 are not visible on the front end. The h3 text is not present on the front end but is present in the source.

Once again, can I please know how can I share the URL of my website privately to show you the exact problem?

Thanks but the problem is my website has tons of h3 tags in the source BUT most of the h3 headings show in the source don’t show up on the front end.

How can I share my website URL privately so that you can check it and see why the theme is inserting H3 tags that are only in the source and not on the front end.

Now this link shows up in the source code and it is a 404

http://domainxxxxxxxx/wp-content/themes/Newspaper-child/style.css This file does exist but all the link checkers show it as 404. Any solution for this 404?

Thanks for replies guys. Here is little bit background that I did not share before because I thought this may not be the reason of these links because the Newspaper theme has been on our site for weeks.

In August we had a premium theme from Themeforest called Pinpress. That theme has messed up code. It created over 20,000 404s in Google Webmasters. They acknowledged that their theme did that. We gave up on them because they fixed some of the code but then more of their code had similar problems. They kept saying it’s an honest mistake.

We changed to Newspaper in September. So, I thought they should no longer appear. We ran some broken link checkers e.g. Link Checker, Website Auditor and W3C Link Checkers. All of those numbered permalinks do not show up in the source code anymore. On the previous theme they did show up on all of these link checkers.

But I am not sure how Google finds them because source code does not have them (on the older theme we could see these numbered broken links). I have seen Google cached versions of pages and they also show the new theme (Newspaper).

Our sitemap also lists all the correct URLs without numbers.

No, there was no demo content on the site. The site already had it’s own content when we changed to Newspaper.

Besides even the demo content won’t have numbers at the end of URLs (most probably)

If you guys want the link to the website it can be shared but can I share it privately? If yes then how? Thanks.

It could be that the this single page is using Visual Composer. All the other pages that show comments are not using Visual Composer.
