It was a caching issue. It was the wp-rocket cache plugin that caused the problem. I deactivated the plugin and and the Main Menu works fine again.

The slow search function of the Newsmag Theme seems to be caused by added plugins besides the plugins that come with the theme. When I deactivate plugins (any plugin) the search speed increase significantly.
The problem can be solved by instead using the standard wp-search widget.

I have implemented all your suggestions. The tagDiv search function (icon in main menu) is still responding many times slower than the inserted wp-search function I have placed in the top menu (to replace the original theme search function in order to provide a faster search).
