Thanks, no, it grabs the image caption when ever the photo is at the top of the post.

No. It uses the image caption on all posts. In fact, the only way to stop it using the image caption is to manually put in the excerpt.

I deactivated all plugins, apart from tagdiv. Still does it. This changed around the time you changed your themes to support gutenberg.
