Worked perfectly. I think I’m getting the idea now. Much appreciated. If I use it in a side bar of a post I guess it will pick up only the categories that the post is assigned to?

Edit – OK, I’ve now added widgets to my side bar on my posts via the dashboard widgets section, and added a flex block, to display the latest posts. So I’m happy with this. It does not seem to observe the excerpt length setting, and then I see this seems to be the case everywhere – I alter the excerpt length from the default 25 to something else, but the length of the excerpt shown does not change. Possibly a bug?

OK, it does not seem to work.

I will work through the steps I have taken and you can see where I have gone wrong.

1. I am using the Category template of magazine pro.

2. In View mode, I click on a category tab on a post and it takes me to a page using the Category template. (It shows “Global Category template – Magazine PRO” at the top left).

3. I then click on the green “Edit with TagDiv Composer” button on the WordPress top right menu bar. The Welcome to TagDiv Composer side bar opens.

4. On the right side of the page I have a block I have titled “Latest articles”.

5. I want it to just show articles in the category selected. (This is just a test of the features I am trying to understand, since there is no point doing this here, because the post loop can show the articles latest first.)

6. I click on the “latest articles” block (Its a flex block 1)

7. I click on filter and select the special filter “Category – Current category”.

8 Save and view.

9. I click on a category tag and check the first article shown in “Latest articles”.

10. It shows a post that is not in the category. Fail.

I have misunderstood somewhere.

Looks like we are talking at cross purposes. I have already done some inner rows, etc on pages.
Let me rephrase:
1. TagDiv Blocks, as I understand it, only run on what WordPress calls “pages”, not “posts”. Is this correct? Does it apply to shortcodes?
2. Posts display articles posed to them.
3. But supposing it was possible to choose a block, on a page, whose purpose was to do a display similar to what the “Column text” extended shortcode can do? All you do is set the post ID in the filter, and in view, it runs the article.

So that was my first suggestion. The client’s current CMS does this.

Second, in my second paragraph, I was asking about what WordPress calls “Posts”. I can’t get a side bar on my posts. Not looked into this thoroughly, I’m sure it is somehting simple, but when i can, I’d like to get “latest Posts” into there somehow – yet my understanding is that blocks don’t work in posts…

Edit – sorry in my final paragraph I meant that the category tag displayed is not necessarily the one set – but the posts are of course posts in that category, not multiple categories as such. But my main point is that nothing “special” happens – I could achieve the same effect by selecting the category in the category pull down.

Actually, it is no big problem. If we don’t publish the new issue page, then we can see all the published posts on it and deal with any issues before publishing.

If we filter the home page on issue tags too, then the new content doesn’t appear unless and until we update the block filters, after the issue page has been put to bed.

So its all good, as they say.

Thank you Bettina, I will look into this further to understand it, as my test following your example seemed no different than to select <all categories>. I am missing something.

But changing the subject back to my original post, it appears that I can import html from our client’s huge back catalogue into the WordPress database to create pages (as opposed to posts) without the risk of losing the input if edited with tagdiv if I add the tagdiv code for column text to both ends.

For example:

insert the following into the wp_posts “post_content” field:

This appears robust. Would you agree? Is there a limit to the text size that the tag div editor can cope with? I would prefer my issue content pages to be pages rather than posts for consistency.

And final question, Is there a limit to the number of Post IDs I can add into the flexblock post ID filter?

So, does the block Category filter option “Single – related from tags” just mean that you can select this option if you enter a value in the “Filter by tag slug”?

If I set a Filter by tag slug I usually leave the Category filter as “All categories” and it is fine. Perhaps I am missing something, or am I being pedantic (my usual failing).

Perhaps it is only there as a guide?

But I am not sure I properly understand all the “Single-xxx” options in the Category filer pull down list

I only ask as I want to know about every functionality – I find more options all the time.

Thanks Bettina. Could I ask, what is the function of the blocks’ Category filter option “Single – related from tags”? I can’t find much mention of this option in the documentation, and not sure what it does, and the other related options.

Thanks, Anamaria, no worries, the Text with image block is good to go, since the text takes standard html, so I’ve added links in there manually. It is not over the image, but it looks good.

Ah right, I see that now – I had looked at pages and assumed the same for posts.

But a test shows that posts are editable using the usual WordPress editor, irrespective of having been posted with the Newspaper theme installed, and take the usual WordPress formatting code in the WordPress database.

And yes of course, pages will be redesigned if moving to a new format, so this is no issue.

OK, are there plans for this?

I’m sure a competent programmer could code to take the content of the wp_posts post_content field and convert it into the format it is displayed in – presumably making use of some tagdiv php files.

We’ll be with TagDiv for a few years at least I’m sure, but can you give assurances that there’ll be support for this conversion work from TagDiv, even if we have to do it ourselves?
