No the links do work but because of the way that WordPress handles these types of links you need to include the http:// or https:// infront of the link because otherwise its going to treat it as a link on the current website.

Did you set a background color? If so that might be the cause of it.

To be fair Chris S the theme does have some major issues with the lazy load animation and he is experiencing them and so are a lot of other customers. The new version does have quite a few inherent flaws with it.
