Can you update from Newspaper to 7.0 to the newest 8.8?

I admit I am way behind on my updates…just got notification of the newest version 8.8…I am still on 7.0.
Can I update to the newest 8.8 update batch? Or do I have to upload some of the older version updates first?

You can simply follow the theme update guides

It is good practice to try and keep WordPress, the theme and the plugins updated to the latest versions when available and also possible.
There were many changes from 7.0 until the latest 8.8, check the changelog at the bottom of this page

Be sure to make a backup before updating, just to be safe. Also review the theme requirements
