Is it possible to update the theme without reinstalling the theme?

This depends on the version you want to update from. If you already had the latest version before the update was released then you can use the patch that comes with the theme and simply replace the files provided there via FTP: http://screencast.com/t/et2UQjUG2T1j and then update your plugins especially visual composer as it has issues with the new version of wordpress.

Ok hmmm I bought the theme from Envato about a year ago and have not updated but I downloaded the available update which I think is just the whole theme. On other themes I have installed I can update from the wordpress admin. I guess that is where I am at. Any thoughts?

If you bought the theme a year ago and did not update since, then you will have to reinstall the theme as the patch will not work. If you have newspaper 6, then your settings will be kept, but if you have newspaper 4 then it will be a bit more tricky. Hey I am currently running Newspaper V 6.5.1 So I would need to look up which files are new and then update and load the files to the server? I cant update through word press?

Technically there are no other changes in the new update besides the new versions of the plugins. Visual composer and revolution slider. If you download the package and just install the new plugins versions, you will have the latest version. It will not say you have it but there is no other change involved.
