Hi, I am planning to upgrade my site to Newspaper 8 from Newspaper 7, maybe by next week or next month.
I hope the transition in not going to be difficult and painful.
Can the forum please release a step by step guide, since I am still using WordPress 4.8.5 at moment, because last time I read newspaper 7 will not run on wordpress above 4.9.0 because of the virtual composer or something, is this correct?
So, should I update the wordpress first or the theme first? Should I disable all plugins in the process.
My site currently have almost 7.300 articles and I don’t want to get too messy on the process.

First thing that you should do is to make a full backup of the website, just to be safe and also have something to return to in case of issues, this is an update guide

The most recommended update method would be by FTP. Update the theme plugins as well (deactivate and remove, then reinstall from latest theme package).
Note that in version 8 of the theme, the tagDiv composer was introduced. This composer will be activated by default when the theme is updated or installed. In order to use it all the pages have to be recreated with it. Or you can continue using Visual composer for the moment, and make the transition when you want, if you want. More about it here

Simply by being active the tagDiv composer could cause issues to pages built with Visual composer, containing Visual composer elements. So you could disable the tagDiv composer for the moment and there will be no problem.
Also a multi-purpose plugin was introduced, this adds many more elements and options to the tagDiv composer only

Visual composer (now WPBakery Page Builder) is still provided in the theme package and updates are included along with the theme

There are currently some issues with the latest version of the theme, these happen only in certain circumstances. A theme update is scheduled as soon as possible (certainly this week). So you could consider waiting for theme version 8.7.2 to be released before updating.
