Update problems + child theme

Hi, I’m Diego from Argentina. I apologize because my English is bad. First of all I would like to thank you and congratulate you for this WordPress theme. It is really amazing and very intuitive to use it.

I need help. I would like to add the new features that you are incorporating in each update, but I am having problems. I made the update through the Envato Market Plug-In according to this guide: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/

… but I absolutely lost EVERYTHING I had customized in the “Newspaper” theme. I had to load a backup of the site and go back. No update was made.

I read that it is necessary to add a “child” of the theme but I do not know how to do it, and I do not know how to copy everything I did in the main theme and clone it into the child. Can you help me? Can I give you my username and password of the WP and the cPanel?

I have little knowledge about web design and I have a online newspaper here in Argentina. I don’t want to lose all the work that I had made and has to design everything again in a “child” theme.

Thanks for your time. I am at your disposal.

Hello dhcosta,

First of all, I will thank you for your kind words and we are happy seeing happy customers!
Please keep in mind that we every time recommend to our customers that before doing a theme update to do a full backup to the database to avoid losing all of the data. We do not recommend to update the theme using the Envato Toolkit plugin because it’s not the reliable way and might appears some errors, sorry! Please update the theme via FTP way because this is the surest and healthy way for updating your theme. Please follow the steps from here -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/ Also, if you want to customize your theme, we do not recommend to edit the theme core files because the next update will overwrite all of these files and you will lose all of your custom modifications. You should use the child theme and for this, before using it, you should read the documentation from here -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/

Thanks for your understanding!

Thanks for your reply, Catalin.

So… I’ll download the latest Newspaper Theme and upload it via FTP like this tutorial shows it and I will not lose anything? I already has a “newspaper” folder in the wp-content/theme. What about the “theme child”? I have to create it? I have to disable the cache in order to do this?

All customization that I did was via the Newspaper Theme Panel. I will lose it too? What’s the “theme core files”?

Thanks for your time and sorry for all this question. I don’t have the knowledge.

OK, I red the documentation, thanks!
Via FTP I add the Newspaper-Child, previously extracted from the themeforest-5489609-newspaper file. Inside this file, in a folder called CODE I found the “Newspaper-Child” folder. That’s the folder that I upload into the “public_html/wp-content/themes”
There I have 2 folders now: Newspaper and Newspaper-child.

Then I have to go to the WP administrator and I have to activate the “Newspaper-child” theme. That’s allright?
After that I have to update the Newspaper folder (in wp-content/themes) via FTP with the themeforest-5489609-newspaper file and that’s all?

Thanks for your time.

Hello dhcosta,

Yes, and the child theme should have to be loaded from Theme->Appearances from the panel.

Thanks.

I’m doing it right now, thanks.

When you release an update I have to upload the “Newspaper” folder via FTP and it will be OK? I don’t have to change anything in the Newspaper-child, right?

Hi,

You can update by FTP, that would be the most reliable method. We have a guide for updating the theme
https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
If you use a child theme be sure to check the list of modified files that we include with each update. Files that you modify in a child theme may also be modified by us, so the two modifications may not work together. So modifications made by you to a theme file may need adapting.

Thanks

Hi Simion, thanks for your reply.

I only make some modification via “Theme Panel” in the child theme so I guess that I don’t need to look up for any “list of modified files” that you include with each update, right? Please tell me where is that list and the changelog of each update?

Thanks

Theme panel changes will not be affected by a theme update, they are saved in the database of the website. Also backups can be made for the theme panel if needed
https://forum.tagdiv.com/import-export-theme-settings/

There is only one theme panel, this is in no relation to having a child theme or not.

The child theme would be mainly used for making modifications to the theme files, that would be it’s main purpose. Having a child theme is not necessary for the functionality of a website, it is optional.

More information about child themes can always be found online
https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes
http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/wordpress-child-theme-pros-cons/
https://www.wordpressdepartment.com/wordpress-child-theme-pros-cons-wordpress-child-theme/

The theme changelog and list of modified files can be seen in the theme presentation page
https://themeforest.net/item/newspaper/5489609
Scroll down the page and you will see it.

Thanks
