My site is: http://www.agentinsider.com.au – I am on the “personal hosting” with this company: https://wphosting.com.au/web-hosting/ but after bringing up the slowness I am apparently now on the “business hosting”.
But if you visit my site it takes so long to load… https://gtmetrix.com/reports/agentinsider.com.au/ADWmyXKb says 5.8 seconds but I keep checking on different friends phones and it takes about 10 seconds. :/ I want / need it to be 3 seconds – max 4 seconds.
Do you have any idea why this is happening? Do you think it should work fine on that hosting plan?
I have seen the tagdiv page on speeding up the website. I would like to know if you think it should be way faster than this on the hosting plan I am on.
Or is it more normal to have a SUPER powerful hosting account just to run the default Newspaper Theme?

Yes it is normal. You can have THE most powerful host out there if the page speed optimization is not done properly.
Page speed has to be optimized. Work has to be done on it to work properly. There is no magical speed button to press and have great speed unfortunately :).
You will have to invest time and effort into it.

I did the above and the website receives a speed score of 51 (previously 24) on Google PageSpeed but on gtmetrix.com the PageSpeed score has gone from 53 to 49.

So I have taken the names in there and found them in the CPanel and adjusted them as the TagDiv instructions say.

When it came to the JS what the Google PageSpeed page showed did not match the code that displayed at the top of my page so I haven’t adjusted any JS – as in I haven’t moved any to the footer.

So I have done all of the speed steps the TagDiv page says to do but it is still super slow. Do you know why?
PS I know images can be optimised but that is currently the 4th point in Google PageSpeed test – when it is number 1 I will know everything is not the problem. Even the current biggest image Google is finding is quiet small anyway.
Also, now Google PageSpeed test has gone back down to 24. :'(

Please make all other optimization besides the render blocking js and css and ignore google’s position in the list. Image optimization has a pretty big impact.

As for the render blocking js and css you will have to use speedbooster and make the proper code changes as instructed in the page speed guide.
Page speed is a very personal thing and is different from one host to another. Lots of factors kick in and it cannot be a one click job. This is something each user has to do on their own install and figure out what works best for them. There are literally TONS of page speed guides online. Please also check with them as our guide is not a definitive guide on what to do and what not to do. We simply pointed out a few obvious things to improve but there is a lot more to be made if you want to have top loading speeds.

I know I have to use speed booster… that’s why I just showed you the code it displayed when I activated the speed booster plugin…

Images are optimised before they have been uploaded. Google says the biggest is 21kb – small.
Yes, I have already checked other speed guides and done things like going through Cloudflare. I have tested other heavy themes on this same hosting and they work fine. It is just your Newspaper theme.

I wanted to say that images make up to more page speed than render blocking js and css. I meant to leave them for last and figure out all other implications. If everything else is in chack I can only recommend speedbooster if you say you know how to use it. However speedbooster will not be able top move ALL of the js and css to the footer. It has not been tested with every plugin out there.

In our case we tend to manually un-enqueue the main CSS, move to footer, remove things like comments.js via functions.php hook/filter since we don’t use comments on our sites anymore, and use the ‘scripts to footer’ plugin to move .js to footer.
Main issues with speed are usually
a) image optimization
b) minify the main css and js when done messing with them
c) time to live, gzip settings
d) using PHP 5.6 and up with opcache — don’t use 5.2/5.3 and try moving on from 5.4 as all are end of life, and possibly no longer secure, and slloooooow with WP
e) limiting external calls – such as ping to FB/twitter for “number of likes/shares”
f) limiting number of ad units per page
g) consider removing all Google fonts and going with web-safe font stack; or limit to only ONE Google font family
(etc)
If you look at your GTmetrix score, note the item ‘enable browser caching…’ this is the ‘time to live’ that items should live in browser; such as your style sheet be cached first time and not reloaded every new page. See the various tutorials, and help on GTM for how to do that — it’s also covered in my long winded optimization thread in the docs > tutorials > best of forums section here.
If you look at your GTmetrix score, it appears you have the gzip settings okay.
However you have bad score for the expiration headers, or time to live, or browser caching — often referred to in those different ways.

yep…. I usually recommend testing page speed with ‘ads off’ — as this tells you what your actual baseline is, and then you can decide how much you want to wreck with ads and other external junk. 🙂
I am literally in another browser tab right now changing my adsense ads from text+images to “text only” to see if that helps at all. Sheesh. Turned on 2 ad spots just now and went from 90+ to 78 .. and went WTF??? 25 little bits of crap from ad units, graphics, pixels, blah blah. Hideous. Google needs to clean house on their ad units other than text, as it’s just awful — up to 20 point hit now running two banner ads from AdSense. Insane!!!! #WAHH
And – obviously for speed testing; try a post without 20 videos on it — just normal post with local photo(s); etc. — that is your ‘baseline’
video posts slower as video has to come from outside your site; same with ads, etc. — you can do some tricky bits with that; I have a YT plugin which makes a thumb, and loads nothing from YT until clicked on, which is neato for that.
Well, I don’t integrate ADS at all. I hate them and I bet my reader hate them as well :]
Would you mind sharing the plugin? xD Sounds like it’s really an improvement.
I think this is the YT plugin I use — it might not work with the video template; dunno. Only using it for vids placed into posts.
