Christopher is a long time WordPress user. Anything else you need to know is private ;-) I *do not* work for TagDiv, but I've been using their themes since late 2013.

try sending email to contact@tagdiv.com

note we run our own server with various virus tools; and there is no such virus in our copies as downloaded from Themeforest.

You can also download the file on your own PC and run local anti-virus to see if actual or not. Normally you can also run the free Securi scanner on your site.

Might need to call your host directly since that is false positive.

Well, note the “sync” button on the Disqus settings tab ?

That is how you “sync” your local site with Disqus — both of those are BUTTONS you need to click to download comments to your own dbase off their server, but also “sync” your data with theirs for I/O … at least that has been the case with my site.

The theme uses the built-in WP comment datafield — meaning, if Disqus/other plugin writes to the WP dbase normally, then the theme can pull from that to get the # of comments. Theme has NO control over the plugin, or the plugin writing to the WP dbase.

Anything in the Disqus box is NOT on the server/site/dbase — it’s loading externally. So, unless the data is getting shared/saved locally, then WP and thus the theme cannot see it. 🙂

If plugin not working right, you’d need to check with the plugin author.

Hi, Emil
I did find one that would seem to work for the client/friend … which is this one:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/the-events-calendar/

which, funnily enough is the same one you suggested! 🙂

If you want an idea for another theme to offer at some point a “music” theme with support for audio clips/players, video clips/players, band event calendar and woocommerce support to sell band stuff, newsletter signup to mailchimp, you’d have another winner !

Hi
before doing auto-updates, good idea to download and review the changelog. For the latest update, for example, the only thing that changed was update to visual composer for a security patch and so you didn’t need to update the “whole theme,” and just update the plugin.

Manual install is still always “safest” way to go as the Envato thing sometimes just simply does not work and I totally abandoned even trying to use it, for exactly the issue you are now facing!

Just an opinion, food for thought.

WordPress allows you to rename the theme folder, and you can rename theme in CSS but to hide the “td” classes you’d have to rename them and edit all the modules, includes, functions, templates to remove them.

You might google how to change the WordPress theme folder as this is pretty common knowledge.

I do that for our sites to change the name for our network, such as /themes/ournetwork/

I’m playing with this on another site project where the WP install is inside a sub-folder and that extra /category/ thing was even more annoying ! 🙂

simchris

That is managed by WordPress, not the theme.
You cannot easily do it, and it may break things.

You can try the “.” trick, by potting a single period in the box in WP admin for category name.

You can also try the option in the Yoast plugin.

Or some plugins like this one might work:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/remove-category-url/

Hope that’s a starting point, unless I misunderstood 🙂

You know, I’m going to plead stupid on this one 😉

simchris

If it’s a simple CSS mod, and you describe it very carefully and possibly with a screen shot/mockup, TagDiv might be able to give you simple solution if not too complex 🙂

TagDiv doesn’t do custom work, but you can likely hire a developer from places like:

Pesky WordPress does this to not break some things like RSS, etc. …

see old topic on this issue:
https://wordpress.org/support/topic/excerpts-remove-html-can-i-reverse-that

some folks use this plugin as a way to control it –
https://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-excerpt/

See prior post/answer.

Did you upload the entire theme folder over the old one; or did you properly delete old theme folder then upload the new theme — that is common issue. Also be sure to delete cache on server/CDN as applicable and clear your own cache in browser for any java issues.

Not sure that is cause; but worth a try! 🙂

The script update is AFTER you install the new version of the theme.

Again, see the docs on how to upgrade.

I always upgrade via FTP myself … normal practice is delete old theme and plugin folders, as per usual; upload new theme folder and new plugins.

1) see the theme docs >> right side of page on how to upgrade from 4x to 6x — and YES! 🙂

https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/

2) I think that is covered in the docs … or was …

Updating from Newspaper 4:

Newspaper 6 is a whole new theme that we release for free to our existing customers. The old version of the theme can be found in the /old_version folder.

We recommend that you do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one. If you do a ftp update over the existing theme there may be issues. Please make sure that you delete the following files from Newspaper 4:
•page-homepage-bg.php
•page-homepage-bg-loop.php
•page-homepage-blank.php
•page-homepage-loop.php
•page-homepage-timeline.php

Please update Visual Composer and Social Counter when updating from V4

Updating from Newspaper 4: Please run the import script if you want to update from an older version of newspaper but only after you backed up your settings. After running the import script it may be impossible to roll back to the older version of the theme without a backup of the database!

The import script does the following operations:
•Imports the old settings to the new theme
•Renames all the shortcodes from your pages to the new names
•Imports all the sidebars
•Renames all the widgets from the sidebars to the new names

3) TagDiv does not do the upgrades for you; but you can hire folks to do that if you don’t know how.

Maybe check the page with console in chrome to see if errors; try turning off some plugins except visual composer, and presumably woocommerce … ?

simchris
tagDiv Member

That would not make sense; since they are two totally different things.
Try clearing all the caching in both the server/cdn if using and in browser.

simchris

Make sure you check all your disqus settings on the settings panel on your site; as Disqus *does* write to the comment count field when synced; however it doesn’t seem to work on the author page so you might need to comment that out on the author template.

Been using Disqus with Newspaper for 2 years now, so it *does* work — just need to make sure the settings are correct. Often doing a couple of “sync” operations and letting that “catch up” will work.

It’s not instant. 🙂

Try disabling the lazy loading feature from the theme admin; this causes timeout issues on some servers (we have it disabled here). 🙂

simchris
tagDiv Member

Sorry … I did not try the proxy.

simchris
tagDiv Member

I think you can modify the CSS to do that. Others have done so in past, and that might be found by searching forum. Or wait for one of TagDiv’s awesome “how to hack it” examples 🙂

For the excerpts in RSS you have two choices, just like all excerpts on the site

a) have WP auto generate an excerpt from the start of your post; you can control some of that from theme panel for modules – not sure how that impacts RSS

b) manually put something in the excerpt box in the post panel

or if you’re using Yoast SEO, you can also presumably custom enter excerpts for the post meta for SERPS in the Yoast panel — not sure how that impacts RSS either.

——
for our news sites where the news item starts with AP style datelines, we allow WP to auto-generate the excerpts.

For our magazine sites with articles and reviews, we manually put in the WP post excerpt box what we want to be used sitewide and in RSS for the ‘excerpt’ from story.

Hope that helped.

If you have 5 pages of a category then delete something and only have 4 pages, then the page 5 would no longer exist and generate 404 error.

This is most common when importing the demo content, then deleting it to put your own content and using some of the same category names vs renaming them to your own.

Might not be your issue, but have seen that before 🙂

Having proper sitemap helps, too.

simchris
tagDiv Member

You might need to add the “thumbnail upscale” plugin and THEN do the regenerate thumbnails.

simchris
tagDiv Member

Right. I just use the built-in “featured” category to manually select stories I want “featured” on our home page, such as in a mid-size slider at top; then set the slider to only show the items from the ‘featured’ category and nothing else.

So, that was my thinking on how to adapt that behavior. Sorry didn’t have perfect answer 🙂

TagDiv might have some more insight when they get back in the saddle.
