Christopher is a long time WordPress user. Anything else you need to know is private ;-) I *do not* work for TagDiv, but I've been using their themes since late 2013.

Tip: to get the code to show up in forum
a) post wrapped with the code button
b) then after post, wait a moment, then edit your post, and resave
c) it should then show the actual code that we can’t see from your post at the moment. 🙂

ha! Yes, that’s one of the reasons we still do our “main” business site as .shtml vs WordPress. Much easier to “change something” since it’s on the page, and load stuff dynamically via SSI, and the pages are inherently static so no caching plugins to suffer. Lose some of the simplicity of things from dbase loading, and from time to time have to manually change something on all pages which is pain, but sooooo much easier!

Of course for a “news portal” a CMS is only way to fly. But, lots of elements to deal with due to WP, theme on top, plugins on top, then content, then SEO — plus the underlying server stuff running below WP — and then the external stuff being loaded on page. More complex than most people think — certainly not, “install wordpress, get a theme, type in your about us page — done” (AHAHAHAHAHH!). 🙂

You can see your “actual” page by doing “view source” in web browser for one of your posts.

I think you use the shortcodes found in the visual post editor, but i just use regular blockquotes and not the fancier versions.

simchris

Hm.
you can try loading a post page in Chrome, then hit F12 and it should tell you if there is some bizarre unclosed div tag or something.

And of course, make sure you don’t have your zoom set to 150% or something as that always wrecks some stuff with VC 😉

I have not yet updated to the latest-latest version so my comments are probably more anecdotal from 10 years of WordPress gremlins …

look like you will need to redo your homepage … which can often be quickly tweaked by redragging a couple of rows into place to see if they work or not.

Most people just redo the home page layout to get on with their life.

On your posts, having two sets of social media codes at bottom likely not a good idea … if using a plugin, try turning OFF the ones built into the theme as a starting point.

For example on this page, in the console there is a ton of object fails from twitter:

hmmmm…. okay weird the docs seem to work for Newsmag docs but not in the Newspaper docs for “full ad system” with examples … the link you’re seeing in the panel is for the docs, and go nowhere.

From the newsmag docs you can see and example like so:

https://forum.tagdiv.com/ads-system-full-guide/

example code for placing HTML into the ad box — as shown in your screen cap — that big box is where you put your HTML like an image link wrapped in anchor link.

as so:

<div class="td-visible-desktop">
 <a href="http://google.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://demo.tagdiv.com/newsmag/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/rec728.jpg" alt="" /></a>
</div>
<div class="td-visible-tablet-portrait">
 <a href="http://google.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://demo.tagdiv.com/newsmag/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/rec468.jpg" alt="" /></a>
</div>
<div class="td-visible-phone">
 <a href="http://google.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://demo.tagdiv.com/newsmag/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/rec320.jpg" alt="" /></a>

Did you do the dbase update tool after update? That should convert most of the shortcodes.

Some things are CHANGED, and you will need to redo them no matter what. It’s like a new theme, not an update. It’s totally different code, with some overlap for consistency, but not the same them as v4.

You will need to tweak your sidebars, widgets, menus, homepage — sometimes just “resaving” them will fix it; in some cases you will need to adjust things like the search template from v4 no longer there for search results page, etc.

WordPress cannot automatically import images from external sites. You need a plugin to do that which will assign the image to the “featured image” so that local thumbs are generated to show up on your front page (“cover”).

I use “auto post thumbnail PRO” on Envato 🙂

In my case, my site looks great in IE11, it’s just the admin aspect that doesn’t always work properly.

Your site looks fine to me in IE11. Note there is a known issue if you have “zoom” enabled in your web browser.

Yes to Q 1.

For Q 2:
Either in YOAST SEO, in header.php file, or use the HTML download option to put a verification file in the root of your site (this way if theme, plugin, whatever go kabooky you don’t have to redo it).

Note – fyi, if you lose or break the verification code on your site; you can always go back to Google and get it again as the code does not change — it’s a numeric value calculated based on your website domain name.

Well, if you look through my optimization tips, there is actually a section on how to NOT have all the thumbs by turning off the sizes you don’t actually use, and setting the default WP media settings to your 3 most common sizes so you don’t get those as well.

So, looks like you have some reading to do 🙂

Be sure to increase the base memory for your WordPress site in your wp-config.php file, to at least 64MB and preferably 96MB or more. Visual Composer and all the latest plugins like Yoast do use more memory and WP defaults to a paltry 40MB which is nothing these days.

I have mine set to 256MB but have lots of RAM.

Yeah… I had to go in and just “resave” modules when moving from 1.5 to 1.7 awhile back. Thankfully it’s not terribly hard. IN my case I forgot to turn off mod_pagespeed first, which meant some of the caching was on, and so something didn’t quite carry over during the upgrade. Annoying, but thankfully not something we have to do every day …. 🙂

Put another way, you’re not obligated to use the speedbooster plugin, the theme does not “require it” – it’s a feature which may or may not work with your setup, but if you choose to use it then there are some limitations and some customizations you may need to do to fully optimize your site.

simchris

a) regenerate your thumbnails for your existing content, per the theme docs
b) see the speed up info in the documentation, such as caching and optimizing your htaccess file settings — the docs specify how they get that speed
c) see my ‘sticky’ post on optimization at top of the forum for tips on optimizing your site using various methods

Be sure to clear cache, and possibly go and resave your module and sidebar widget.
That has worked for me in the past after update. Might not help here, just a thought.

btw, any interest in syndicating news from our wire service (Send2Press®) ?

You can automatically pull in our news via RSS2 and photos into WordPress to add additional first-class news content not copied from anywhere else.

eg., entertainment news:
https://www.send2press.com/XML/s2p-news25.xml

all news
https://www.send2press.com/XML/s2p-news1.xml

(we have non-https version as well…. )

shoot me a note if you’d like to add our content (free!). 🙂

And again, for those coming to this thread… it’s not a very stable system in FB land for some things. We have found in particular prior to 10am PDT, it’s more likely to have issues with capture. Meaning, Monday at 8am PDT 8/3/15, no shares would capture from our main site. But at 11am they all worked.

Note I have been too busy trying to build an elaborate ecommerce system for my company’s service offerings to update any of my sites to NewsMag 2.1x from 1.7x and test stability of new version of Visual Composer with “our server.”

Basically – if your server crashes with Visual Composer running, you will know you need to use older version of VC or the shim.

Radu will have to weigh in on whether the “shim” works with current version of NM 2.1 — I would “guess” that if the shim is included in the big download someplace then it may be.

In December we will be doing full OS reload to move to latest versions of CentOS, Plesk, etc., so that will be a whole new barrel of monkeys.

Those can be embedded players for advertisements to show video ads on your pages.
They are typically dynamic ads which load on top of videos (how Google monetizes the free videos you’re loading on your website).

Simple fix: don’t load YouTube videos on your site 😉

Link seems to work for me in the documentation for Newspaper 6, at least on desktop:

Sorry if I sounded mean and rude. Was having bad day.
I don’t work here, so don’t take any response from me as anything from TagDiv, who have more patience than a dog waiting for his master to come home, with treats 🙂

There is “adware” in circulation which injects Prosperent links into text; but most of the sites claiming to remove it are, themselves, pushing malware.

For our sites we’d prefer NOT having featured image carry over to next page(s) as it’s no longer the ‘cover’ and might “run into” other images placed at start of the page break.

simchris
tagDiv Member

Your web hosting company should set up your site so that directories cannot be viewed. Put in a support ticketto them and show the issue, as that should be set at server level.

simchris

The purpose of the compression is intended for making the thumbnails very small, not any images which are being enlarged. Idea is that you use large image for “featured image” and then only the thumbs (the little images on indexes and home page, side bar, etc.) get “compressed.”

Obviously you need to adjust to YOUR particular setup. We use 50 on all our sites and looks great for retina on iPad. But we start with images at least 500×375 for interior images, 350px minimum width for vertical inline pix, and our large featured images are 640xNNN.

We don’t compress again using any plugin or jetpack or whatever – you don’t want to “double compress” files. Obviously if using ANOTHER compression method, you don’t need to do both!

simchris
tagDiv Member

Usually due to not first turning off all plugins prior to upgrade; or turning off caching first.

Remember to delete old theme when doing updates, not simply over-write.

If using a child theme, remember to check changelog to see if child files also changed and need to be updated. Same with plugin versions included with theme.

Often if you need to “recover” — via ftp or via the hosting panel, rename your plugins folder to xplugins, then login. Then rename plugin folder back, and only turn on visual composer, then other plugs to determine if one is a conflict. Don’t use speedbooster unless everything else working.

Hope that helped 🙂
