assuming you did a ‘regenerate thumbnails’ with that plugin after install,

Clear all your caches.
You can also try to regenerate your thumbnails if your images were being loaded via CDN/cloud.

Using the YOAST SEO plugin also helps to manage the meta data seen by Google and can help manage the XML sitemap(s) you submit to Google via your webmaster tools account.

Issue is not with theme — all themes using Visual Composer as a “drag and drop page builder” are having this issue. And this only impacts some servers. We’re using NewsMag on two high traffic sites right now; one which gets a lot of traffic every day, the other gets large hits “depending on the content.”

Not sure what “SmartMag” is as this is the “NewsMag” forum, but if you read my thread then you don’t need to worry …

a) use the theme with current Visual Composer; might not impact your site/CPU depending on how your server is setup.

b) if you have a large CPU hit you will know immediately, and you can switch to using the SHIM plugin.

c) if you have a VERY high volume traffic website (e.g., millions of page views per day) you should be building a “lean framework” which doesn’t have all the pre-built options baked in, as this is not as efficient as a lean framework where you have as little as possible — e.g., TIME magazine is running on a version of twenty-fifteen theme with some custom plugins to manage editorial matters. No page builder, but lots of stuff running via cloud for fast “edge loading” via the Automattic premium platform. In that situation you would be custom building a theme to fit your needs not buying a $50 off the shelf product.

d) in our case we chose the TagDiv folk to redo our news network sites because 16 months ago when looking around they were one of the VERY few who had some clue about pagespeed optimization beyond so-called “SEO READY” … meaning, some thought given to page speed and not just “feature bloat” with some meta tags built in. We had built our own lean framework which was a pain pre-bootstrap, in 2011; went to Woo Canvas in 2012; went to TagDiv end of 2013 (has it been that long?).

But like all CMS platforms where you have a platform running on top of php, then theme(s) running on top of that, then plugins and hooks going into that, there is always a dev/test process on your end to see what works, what needs to be massaged, and what won’t work at all in your particular environment.

If you’re starting a NEW news site, I don’t think you need to worry about high traffic at this stage, as it takes awhile to build that unless you’re using bots or entirely click-bait with paid adwords per story to drive that.

a) they have a fix NOW that works for those with high CPU issues
b) not all users of Visual Composer have an issue
c) the folks who make VC (not TagDiv) may optimize or fix memory issues in future version; TagDiv has NO control over that beyond working with the WP Bakery developers on the issue.
d) they may “roll their own” sideways version of a page builder which is more ‘lean’ at some point, but obviously that takes a bit of time to develop.

The plugin doesn’t “destroy” your thumbnails and images only moves JS to footer and enqueues elements for better page loading.

Suggest:
a) turn off all plugins except visual composer
b) clear server cache; refresh CDN or similar if in use
c) if thumbs not back, use the regenerate thumbnails plugin

My presumption on this is that the shim will be for those folks like us who — for whatever reason — end up with a CPU spike of doom with current versions of Visual Composer running full time if we get upsurge in traffic — like 100x normal. For those without the CPU issue, likely not a big deal. So, this is a solution for that — but *not* a full-on replacement for VC.

From the hints that Radu has made, I think he has it in mind (well the TagDiv team) to come up with possible sideways solution — basically their own version of VC, essentially to not use the VC product at all, but with their own coding since I can imagine there would be some odd licensing issues and they are not the dishonest sort who would reverse engineer VC then bypass WP Bakery folk and use their tech. So, presumably they would come up with their own framework but MUCH “lighter” than how VC does it, where probably 70% of VC stuff isn’t used by most folk (in our case anyway).

Just my impression of where that might go.

I think this “fix” is there for those of us who need it but not a “hey everybody — stop using VC” — which is still needed to build out the layout for home page in first place.

Right now this just takes on the complaint I’ve had the past 18 months with VC, where I’ve often suggested a “design mode” and “deploy mode” … meaning “everything on” for design, then at deploy only use the 20% of stuff you’re actually using. Why load all that crap you don’t need with every load of home page. Kind of like having every option in Bootstrap but only using a quarter of the functions would be dumb. Same idea.

But I ramble ….
working for me so far, and CPU/server happy as a cat in a new blanket with paws full of catnip. Well, I might be exaggerating … 😉

Also “GA” getting hammered by bots would have nothing to do with HOW you place your GA code into your own website …

the feature in TagDiv theme is technically no different than you doing it yourself when the page actually renders; or the Yoast plugin to insert the GA snippet.

Sounds whacko to me.

Obviously you can embed your own GA code in your own website however you want. If a theme developer adds a box in the control panel as convenience to print that for you in the head area so you don’t have to hack the template, that does nothing suspicious or bizarre beyond providing a convenience factor.

Seems like this is a question you might want to address to Envato directly?

I’d not heard that based on using many many commercial themes from ThemeForest (although most given the boot now I’m using TagDiv “almost” exclusively 😉 ).

Ha! People kid me about that one — but it comes up from time to time.

I still use CuteFTP software because it does great job of “auto choosing” the right format if I drag over a folder of stuff when uploading.

The other gotcha is sometimes some files have PC line breaks vs Unix line breaks, and some of the TagDiv files come this way even though I think Radu is using a Mac, which is funny.

I’ve been building websites for 20 years as of March … starting to feel like the “old guy” who has to show everybody how to drop that engine into a car properly 😉

H1 used on post pages.

To add that to home page, simply create a text block — we do this either in sidebar or bottom of page and create a short 20 word description of site with H1 tag.

While this should be obvious …. and assuming you already checked all your Yoast settings, but:

be sure to turn OFF the “remove stop words” setting in Yoast SEO as that is known to cause issues since it does in fact change the actual permalink on the page.

May not be related to your issue. But I did notice on at least 2 of our sites with a Yoast plugin upgrade that got switched to “on” by default, which we do not want.

The conflict with Visual Composer and Yoast SEO is an issue not yet resolved by the two plugin makers, apparently which seems to have started after all the XSS patches done to WP and various plugins.

Also, as an update — the above process with shim and using the VC version included with NM 1.6, and switching back and forth both work perfectly. Preumably this will work same way with current version of VC is you’re using it.

With the SHIM beta 1.02 plugin from TagDiv, only couple of blocks “so far” don’t work for home page

a) full width divider line for new row
b) raw html box
c) column text box

So, when using “shim” beta 1.02 these would reveal on home page

Possibly others; I don’t use the whole kitchen sink; mostly normal content blocks.

I was using the column text element to put a full width h1 tag about website block for SEO.
For the time being to use shim plugin, I just moved that code to my custom sidebar on home page as normal text widget; since I’d already created custom CSS for the text anyway.

You know, I have a whole bunch of licenses and I don’t keep track myself. I don’t think it truly matters to be honest. I think if you have 3 sites and 3 licenses, but you end up using the same license on 2 sites, and one on another site, but third license not used — I’m sure they won’t worry about that. It’s still 3 sites and 3 licenses.

Reminds me I need to buy another one (ahem) for Newsmag!

Likely easiest way to figure that out would be to look at when you bought the licenses and check your records for when you setup each website with the theme?

I recommend using something like MS Excel to keep track of this kind of thing along with other data like FTP login/password, theme version, etc.

I’m sure TagDiv will have a better answer tomorrow 🙂

Update:
testing again today … managed to move another site from NM 1.6 and VC from Jan., to NM 1.71 with Shim Beta 1.02.

One minor issue with a full width (2 col) divider class on home page and full width text block (which I used to put some H1 text bottom of home page about the site).

Radu, sent you couple emails around 12pm PDT 5/11/15.

Presumably only downside to using the “shim” — is that one would need to switch VC back on to edit a page (e.g., static home page), and turn off the shim. I will be testing that usability here momentarily.

So, likely process would be
a) develop home page w/ VC turned on; shim OFF
b) switch off VC plugin
c) switch on TD shim plugin
d) check home page works properly

If one needed to edit
a) switch OFF the td shim beta
b) switch on VC
c) edit page, then repeat process in first block above.

Anecdotal for anybody wondering what is up with this beta testing 🙂

Not sure how mod_pagespeed would work with the swap out of VC vs shim …

for the first site I was testing shim with from last week;
I today switched back on mod_pagespeed (for those unaware, this is an Apache optimization plugin from Google which runs on server) and put back in all my htaccess optimizations and it’s working A-Okay (I had turned off all such optimizations for testing the SHIM plugin first try to avoid any conflicts with that).

Be sure to turn OFF the mobile option in JetPack as the theme is already responsive for mobile; this might not be your issue, but common problem:

Install via FTP; unzip the plugin folder on your hard drive, then upload folder to
/wp-content/plugins/

delete any js_composer folder there now prior to FTP upload.

This works.

What do you mean by change permalink?
Do you mean the “permalink” structure from WP settings ? That normally shouldn’t impact your home page.

Or do you mean the domain name / site URL? That is a whole separate issue unrelated to theme.

Looks like your CSS is not loading.

If you’re using caching or a CDN you need to clear your caching each time you make such changes. If using caching plugin, clear the cache. If using a CDN or “wordpress hosting” — see their support on how to clear cache or “refresh” the settings to allow the new content to load properly.

Hope that helped.

For those who care about my thoughts on this; based on 9 years of suffering WordPress oddities, I usually do this to ensure logos actually work

a) upload logo image via FTP to your image folder (uploads or whatever if you changed it; or even to custom images folder if you want)

b) in the admin panel put in the full URL (not server path) to the logo image, then click SAVE, and then preview of logo will appear showing theme can “see” the logo file(s)

c) clear caching

d) if logo still doesn’t show on site, it’s a caching issue — e.g., look at the page source for your page, and LOOK to see what image is actually loading on your page — is it the right one? If not, then likely cached. If not, go back and double check your logo setting “stuck.”

This may not help you, but it’s how I do it for my sites out of paranoia and logos work on all sites perfectly.

The ad is not a separate element … you’re placing a “widget” in sidebar; the sidebar is sticky on/off … NOT the advert.

So, you can turn OFF the sticky sidebar, which will stop all widgets on sidebar from being sticky. All or none, as far as I know.

Note that having a sidebar with excerpts of new items, subscriber box and one ad — means the element is sticky — NOT the ad itself. If ONLY the ad were sticky that might violate the terms.

Up to you.

TagDiv support might have other solution — but the settings for them are “sidebar on or off” and the ad box is a widget part of sidebar, not separate element.

In theory you could add the ad unit to sidbar above the actual sidebar element, if you want to hack the template(s).

c) solutions for things like Visual Composer CPU/memory crashes

Crappy food takes no time at all; creating the perfect meal takes planning/testing and taste-testers.

I’ve been helping with ‘c’ — ‘a’ has been ongoing patches in recent weeks, ‘b’ new issue; and others not mentioned here.

This is why they didn’t make the end of April they were “hoping for.”

For those who don’t program, you should be aware this process isn’t like painting a house; it’s like painting a house where the walls keep moving, and the type of materials used for the walls may require changes to the kind of paint, halfway trough painting one wall.

Yep. There used to be separate custom ad box – but I guess they combined it into a smart ad box so there wouldn’t be multiple if/then things going on with every page/template.

Anyway – that’s how I do it 🙂
