Hi,

Before the recent theme updates it was possible to modify the single template files in a child theme, and make the modification there. But now the single template files are in the tagDiv composer plugin – http://prntscr.com/oa14e0
It is possible to modify them there, but the modifications will be lost after a theme update.

However you could use a cloud post template – https://cloud.tagdiv.com/#/load/Single
Import/create a cloud post template and apply it to the posts. These templates can be edited with the composer, and also have a modified date element available
http://prntscr.com/oa15wo

Please let me know if you have more questions.
Thanks

Hi,

@CRiTiCAL
That won’t work in a child theme. Currently the only way of loading code in the mobile header is to manually add it in the file mentioned above. I will make a note of this and it will be considered to add a field for it in the theme panel mobile theme settings.

@Jose
That is an interesting suggestion, so something to allow the user to enable/disable the mobile theme for all the categories, posts, pages etc. There will be an option to choose for which pages or posts the mobile theme applies specifically, as an option in the edit screen. I will add this suggestion and it will be strongly considered by our developer team. Thank you for mentioning it.

In the coming theme updates there will be quite a few options added for the mobile theme. These are currently in work, some in testing. All suggestions are welcome. Please let us know if you have more suggestions.

Thanks

I work with the structure Themes/Newspaper-child, in the Desktop version it works well working from that direction.
But in the mobile version I can not find the way to make that modification (I do not want to modify the original files in plugin/td-composer/mobile/head.php), try with this structure /Newspaper-Child/mobile/head.php and it did not work.

Thanks

Hello @devy,

Yes you can add the code from child theme in the main theme, but how you say, you’ll need to re’add it after each update; also if you want you can try the above implementation, but first please make sure that your code is working correctly and you do not have a plugin conflict.

Thank you for your understanding!

Hi Calin

I am also experiencing problems with the child theme not displaying certain templates correctly. If I was to move over to the main theme what shall I do with my functions.php file in the child theme which has many amendments which I do not want to loose or can I add them to the main theme’s functions.php file. However, that what mean re-adding the changes every time there is an update.

Please advise.

Hi,

1. Currently there is an issue like the one you mention, the post templates don’t apply properly when the child theme is active. If you use a child theme, please switch to the main theme for the time being. This problem will be fixed for the next theme update. Sorry for the inconvenience.

2. The tagDiv gallery can be used in Gutenberg, but through a classic element
http://prntscr.com/o9dxumhttp://prntscr.com/o9dyk9http://prntscr.com/o9dz2o
Please try it like this and it should work fine.

3. Custom post types will not have the same settings as default posts. They can’t use the same templates, settings etc. Before the recent updates it was possible to create a template for theme within a child theme, based on the predefined post templates (1->13). But now that is not possible anymore because the post template files were moved in the tagDiv composer plugin. We will try to find a solution in this matter.
There aren’t many settings for CPT and taxonomies, in the composer as well. Most of the options and settings are created to work with default posts and categories.
So having the same possibilities for CPT is not possible.

Let me know if you have more questions.
Thanks

Hi,

Since Newspaper v9.7 the child theme is working only for the functions.php and style.css files.
We wrote an article on the subject here: https://tagdiv.com/updating-the-core-of-tagdiv-themes/
if you want you can try the implementation for the child theme provide by an user in this topic -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/issue-with-9-7-update-changes-single_template_-in-child-theme/

Thank you for your understanding!

Hi
The child theme functionality has been broken since the update of the core for the Envato WordPress requirements. Can you please fix this? You can search fo “child” in the comments in the link below to see that a number of us depend on child themes for customization. I have pasted an excerpt from those comments below, in which I was advised to contact support.
Thanks

Ted Slater June 17, 2019 at 6:50 pm
That doesn’t seem to be true, Catalin. Envato requires that the child theme “Consist of style.css, functions.php and screenshot.png files at a minimum” … but you’re not *disallowed* from including/supporting other files in the child theme.

Seriously, if you stop supporting child themes — where we can edit the single.php (or loop-single.php) file (for example), that decision will mark the day that Newspaper starts going downhill as a theme.

On https://help.author.envato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000480723 Envato references https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/advanced-topics/child-themes/ … which says, “any file you add to your child theme will overwrite the same file in the parent theme” … but with the current version of your theme, this doesn’t work. Adding (and tweaking) the theme’s header.php file to the child theme does nothing.

BECAUSE YOU BROKEN THE CHILD THEME FUNCTIONALITY.

Your statement that “Envato … requires all functionality to be added through plugins” is, to be direct, false. Stop lying to us and once again provide full support for child themes. For the sake of your business, as well as ours.

Hi Ted,

Sorry for the inconvenience but please note that since theme update 9.7 most of the theme files have been moved in the tagDiv Composer plugin, as you can see in our informative article. Now, the child theme is limited to just a few files. This is a consequence of the recent modifications to the location of theme files, due to Envato requirements, sorry! Moving forward with such requirements, a child theme will only work with functions.php, and style.css, as there are very few files left in the main theme as Envato, requires all functionality to be added through plugins. The child theme inherits the look and feels of the parent theme and all of its functions. Where all the functionalities of the theme have been added into a plugin, the child theme no longer has what to get from the parent theme, sorry! The child theme is not a “child plugin”.

Thank you for your understanding!
Best regards!

I have to say I agree with Ted Slater’s comments. I didn’t research your claims, but it does seem unlikely that Envato would require theme developers to disable the Child theme functionality. Please find a solution so that the Child theme will function as it should.

Catalin L.Catalin L. June 26, 2019 at 8:11 am
Hi,

According to Envato Requirements, the child theme is not mandatory to be offered. Also, if this is provided by the theme author, must be checked the following requirements, as you can see here -> https://www.screencast.com/t/JkRUP9LI -> https://help.author.envato.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000480723-WordPress-Theme-Feature-Requirements#h_5966589781211522283728890 which are valid.

Thank you for your understanding!

AvatarK.Y. June 30, 2019 at 5:31 pm
Hi Catalin,
You may not be required to supply a child theme but that does not mean it is acceptable to break the functionality should your users choose to use one.

Please see – https://forums.envato.com/t/is-child-theme-functionality-obsolete-with-the-new-theme-requirements/244151

“Envato requirements have no negative effect over child themes, quite opposite, they encourage you to follow the best standards which makes customization via a child theme much more easier as a result.”

It seems that you have completely misunderstood the Envato requirements.

Using child themes is a standard practice and a best practice that WP users rely on. Please find a solution so that the child theme will function as it should.

Hi,

There is an issue currently, when the child theme is active the post templates won’t apply properly. For the time being it would be better to try and not use the child theme. This issue and a few others that happened after the 9.7.3 update will be fixed in the next theme update. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

If you have more questions let us know.

Thanks

Hello !

Please make sure that you do not have a plugin conflict, please deactivate all non theme plugins, also if you are using child theme or cache plugin, deactivate them, clear all cache and try again. For Cache we do recommend using WP Super Cache. Find out more about it here: https://tagdiv.com/wp-super-cache-plugin-install-and-configure/

Let me know how this works !

Thank you !

The child theme is limited after the latest updates. It contains the required files (stylesheet and functions) that you can use if needed. But now copying theme files in it won’t be possible anymore, because the files are in the composer plugin.
You could modify them in the legacy folder directly, but the modifications will be lost after theme updates, when the themes are updated.

Maybe what you are trying to do is possible in a different way however. Please provide some more details about it.

Hi,

okay i got it. if all the files moved to the tagdiv composer plugins legacy folder, there is no point to create any child theme?
since we can do it all on the legacy folder not it the child theme folder.

thanks
