Hi guys,
I have three questions. Number one:
I want to use a syncronous AdSense tag with a fixed size, but the theme keeps rescaling it like it’s an responsive asynconous Adsense tag. I really want to use the syncronous ad for the article top adspace to make it load faster. The resizing is not an issue, but the theme transforming it into an async tag is. How can I prevent the theme from editing a fixed syncronous Adsense tag? The rest of the article ads (inline and bottom) are used with async responsive tags which resize nicely!
Question two:
I really love the tagdiv speed booster plugin. There is only 1 problem: the plugin does not move my child theme style.css to the footer, which is good, but I still see the flickering at the beginning when the page loads. It somehow looks like the style.css (which has an @import rule to load the newspaper style.css) is still being loaded from the footer. When disabling the speed booster plugin the flickering stops and the page is loaded with the right style from the beginning. How can I use the speed booster plugin without this flickering thing, so I can still use it to move plugin’s CSS and JS to the footer?
Question three:
When using a child theme I somehow can’t minify the newspaper style.css without breaking the site layout. I’ve tried to manually copy the whole newspaper css into my child theme css and leave the newspaper css empty and then minify it, but that still does break the site. How can I minify the css while using a child theme without breaking the website’s lay out?
Hi Alin,
I’m using a child theme. But there are a few modifications.
These are my files:
Download Theme_child and plugin
All the files in theme folder don’t have relationship with the “custom post type” section. The CPT section “cinema” is created by the plugin zipped.
i checked all the the settings of the newspaper theme and i can’t find the problem.
If you want i can send you the export of my settings.
Thanks!.
Hi,
Sorry for delay! We don’t work for weekends!
@meh6927 Please check this guide how to update to the version 6 – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ make sure that you make a full backup before and do this without any plugins active. After you updated the theme please run the script to rename shortcodes, import old settings. All your custom sidebars must be imported as well, but unfortunately you will have to add again the widgets to them as they become inactive or doesn’t exist anymore.
Please note that the Newspaper 6 should be regarded as a new theme, so you need to update also the child theme as the old customizations(files, css) will not work in this version and you need to adjust and re-add them. Here you can find the new child theme documentation(also you can find it in the /code folder) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/
@Gautham Please make a full backup of your current installation and try to update to the version 6 via ftp and disable all you plugins before, follow this guide – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ Then follow the steps provided(in the docs and also above) to run the script, update the theme plugins…
Let me know how it goes!
Thanks!
I have a large custom CSS file. I can either copy/paste the CSS into the “Custom CSS” box in the theme panel OR I can drop the CSS file in the folder of the child theme.
But which is better for website speed and overall performance?
Thanks very kindly, Andrei! I carefully followed your instructions . . . without success.
When I added the code to td_module.php, both the author and title disappeared from the category list (yay!), and the date (though not the author) disappeared from single entries.
Please see the following screenshots.
Before td_module.php code:
– category list: http://www.theq.fm/0001-tagdiv-category-before.jpg
– single entry: http://www.theq.fm/0003-tagdiv-single-before.jpg
Before td_module.php code:
– category list: http://www.theq.fm/0002-tagdiv-category-after.jpg
– single entry: http://www.theq.fm/0004-tagdiv-single-after.jpg
I put in the get_author and get_author_box hiding code into loop-single-2.php (because I’m using Theme Panel > Post Settings > Default post template (site wide) > Style 2), but didn’t see any change.
So, I put in the code wherever I could in ALL of the loop-single files (1–8 and single) just to make sure I was doing things correctly, but to no avail.
I also couldn’t see any difference with the custom CSS in Theme Panel > Custom CSS. =(
Finally, I noticed that the changes I could see only took place when I edited the parent theme’s files directly. I didn’t see any difference whatsoever when editing the same files copied into the child theme.
Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the point of a child theme, but isn’t the whole idea to be able to affect change without editing the parent theme’s files?
Such that, when the parent theme updates, all of your changes aren’t lost?
It feels, with 3 out of 4 conditions being filled because of the td_module.php code, that we’re very, very close. I’d love to get that 4th condition (author name on single entries) hidden!
Please advise on next steps I could take, with many thanks again in advance.
=)

Hiya,
I’m building a site using Newspaper at the moment, and I’m trying to embed a Tableau dashboard in one of the pages.
This is the dashboard I’m trying to embed: https://public.tableau.com/profile/cogdiss#!/vizhome/LondonInStereoListings/Dashboard1 and I’m using the code it gives me at the bottom.
I’ve tried it in both the standard WordPress edit pane, and within a text module in the visual composer, but it’s not displaying. I can see a white screen where it should be, but the content isn’t there.
This is the page where I’ve embedded it: http://cogdiss.com/lisnew/listings/
I’m using the latest version of WordPress, and the latest version of Newspaper with a child theme installed (the one which comes with the theme). The only plugins I have installed right now are Visual Composer, Updraft, Revive Old Post and Limit Login Attempts.
Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated 🙂
Cheers!
Hannah
@Thomas …. Yes, well considering how many security flaws Automattic has had the past decade they are not really reliable on the topic. (sort of kidding there … 🙂 )
FOR EVERYBODY ON THIS ISSUE:
One of my friends news portals in Ohio was completely taken down by hackers pummeling the xml-rpc feature which ANYBODY can attempt to access remotely for all sorts of things. Site was down for almost two days, host disabling account, etc., — I had him disable this to get the site back up, then they blocked the IPS of the attacker.
If you’re using a WP feature like Jetpack — which is awful system hog and site slower-downer, or WP mobile apps (um, why not just use iPad and login into your normal account… or use other tools that don’t need THAT function?).
UPSHOT: for “most” people disabling all XLMRPC and pingback features are wise if you run any sizable site with lots of traffic. You will get attacked at some point.
And it should be self evident if you’re adding ANYTHING to your site from this thread you should make some effort to explore what these things do, what they mean, etc.
So, you shouldn’t be adding anything to your functions file or htaccess regarding the xmlrpc.php file unless you make some effort to look at what that does.
Having used WP for 10+ years now, remember this thread was started to show folks how to “best optimize” their theme for WP — one of those methods is to NOT use ping-backs, XMLRPC or Jetpack, which is not very well optimized for web.
Keep in mind WP folk think a CSS redirect for child themes is good idea, when it’s a bad thing for page speed and Google as it’s a redirect for EVERY page load to another page.
Those are my three cents, your mileage may vary — as I often say.
But that was good info for Jetpack folk, Thomas! 🙂
Hi benigno,
Please provide more details what did you modify and what I asked you above(child theme version..) as I ‘m not sure what did you modify. Please read the documentation hoe the child theme works – https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/
Thanks!
Hi,
Is it possible to use Yoast for Breadcrumbs instead of the Newmag breadcrumbs? I tried to activated the Yoast breadcrumb via the Plugin options but it broke my main menu, even though I had deactivated the NewsMag breadcrumb under template settings.
Do i need to edit my theme files to accomodate this? (I’m using a child theme)
The reason I need this is becase I have a plugin (Sabai directory for a directory with reviews) and NewsMag doesnt recognise the category hierarcy. The plugin developer recommends using Yoast.
It’d be great to hear your thoughts (I know I’m talking about 2 other plugins, but I guess I may have to edit the page.php file?)
Thaaaaanks 🙂
Claire
Greetings!
I searched and found a post on this here https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/post-settings-per-category-or-custom-post-type/ . . . but the solution didn’t work for me.
I uploaded the child theme, created the correct file in the correct directory, and dropped in the . . .
&& !in_category('contests')
. . . code in the appropriate files, but didn’t see any change.
On a whim, I tried making the changes on the theme files itself, which did remove the date in the category in question, but not the author (or the dash between them).
So, to restate: is there a way for me to hide the author and date in category listings and single posts for specific categories?
Please let me know, with many thanks in advance for your time.
=)
Hi,
You need custom modifications to achieve that and it is not an easy task to remove header and footer. I suggest to hire someon to do this for you as we cannot provide custom work at this time, sorry!
Yes, you can add the 404 template in the child theme and customize it like you want, just add it in the root of the child theme – http://screencast.com/t/UaL15ndJU2K
Also if you want to hide the header and footer on 404 template, you can use this custom css in Theme Panel > Custom Css:
.error404 .td-header-wrap, .error404 .td-footer-wrapper, .error404 .td-sub-footer-container {
display: none;
}
Thanks!
There’s a lot of custom CSS in our child theme; are you saying we’ll have to basically rebuild the website to migrate to Version 6?
Will version 4 continue to receive security and plugin updates?
Hi, i’d like to change the 404 page to a full screen image(no header or footer) with just a homepage redirect button. Also i’m using the child theme, so do i add the 404 page in there?
Please let me know how this can be done.
Thank You
Hi,
If you use the stykle 1 you can try this custom css in Theme Panel > Custom Css to remove the gradient – http://screencast.com/t/NULrgUCa4Bj
.td-grid-style-1.td-hover-1 .td-module-thumb a:last-child:before {
opacity: 0;
}
Another solution is to change to style 4 – http://screencast.com/t/7en1L1rrW0NO – http://screencast.com/t/XJIE38h2fsc
Thanks!
Hi,
You will have to update also the child, the old customization(files, custom css) will not work with the new version of the theme, it must be regarded as a new one(the code was rewritten).
Please check the /code folder and upload the child theme – https://forum.tagdiv.com/whats-included/
Also you can check the new child theme documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/
Thanks!
Hi,
Yes, you can upload the Newspaper-child from /code folder via ftp – http://screencast.com/t/pbwGuOp7 and set it from Appearance > Themes – http://screencast.com/t/JBh5ugbE98
Thanks!
Hi there,
I tried deleting the old theme and installing the new theme (through the WordPress interface), then reactivating the child theme, but that resulted in a white (blank) site. How do I upgrade to Newspaper 6 when using a child theme with Newspaper 4?
Thanks,
Ken
Hi
I want to use your child theme and have read your doc here
https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/
so basically I just use FTP to make a folder name “newspaper-child”, upload functions.php and style.css under your zip file/code/newspaper-child and then done?
do I need to activate it from anywhere at mydomain.com/wp-admin ?
Hello I am trying to change the default font so I don’t have to change each one individually, and so when the page loads it doesn’t load the other font first. How would I go about changing it, or is there a custom css to put into a child theme to change the font to: Baskersville “times new roman”, times, serif
Thank you!
Nate
Hello,
Unfortunately if you did not use a child theme for your custom modifications, they will not be saved in the new version after the update. Here is a link to our documentation for the child theme which is what we recommend for custom work https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/
As for the update you can read this tutorial here:https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
Our theme also includes a patch – contains the files modified from the previous version, it’s useful if you made modifications on the code and you want to replace only the files which were modified in the latest update.
In the future you can benefit from this patch but right now you missed the updates to versions 6.3.x so it will not work.
Thank you.
Hi lwweb,
I also have the “The Events Calendar” plugin active on my side but I could not recreate your issue, the event appears on category page as it should.
Please check this without any plugins active except of Visual Composer and Events plugins, clear cache and see if you still have this issue. Also if you use child theme, switch to the main theme and verify this.
If the issue persist please send an email at contact@tagdiv.com so we can take a look(provide more details, the page where you have this issue..), also paste a link to this topic so we can know who you are and what your issue is.
Thanks!
Hi,
For which post template did you done this modifications? Also what child theme version do you use?
Please provide more details and also use pastebin.com and provide your custom modifications so I can check this.
Thanks!
I notice on GTMetrix that some of my images are being scaled:
http://www.screencast.com/t/ORJQnMZA1lbp
These are the ones in my big slider. Those dimensions aren’t available in the theme panel, but are apparently being used by the theme… Should I add these image sizes manually in my child theme functions?
Thanks!
Hi
!. I am not sure what effect you want to obtain, please provide more specific details or an image pointing that effect.
2. Try this custom css in theme panel > custom css: http://screencast.com/t/KOlwsSjl
.page-nav-post a:last-child{
float: right;
}
3. Try this custom css: http://screencast.com/t/Bzfbw5YLr3Z
.td-icon-menu-right:before {
position: relative;
top: -4px;
left: 4px;
float: right;
}
.td-icon-menu-left:before {
position: relative;
right: 4px;
}
4. To display the pagination above the article button add you need to remove the the ad from post content: http://screencast.com/t/PWgzx852 then place the ad after the pagination function in posts’s template file, like this: http://screencast.com/t/pgCbyqSPF You can use the do_shortcode(' ') function and insert the ad shortcode from VC: http://screencast.com/t/W4SFKPnoShn – http://screencast.com/t/lqaJxdVdMee in every post template files coresponding for the post templetes used.
5. I found an image below your article bottom ad which create that blank space http://screencast.com/t/5RAdn7ht07Z I am not sure why appear there, but seems to be added by the above ads so you should check if the ad code it’s valid.
Thanks!
