Hi,

I’ve managed to discover that the issue is being caused by a conflict between the latest update to the theme and Cloudflare CDN.

Disabling/pausing Cloudflare optimisation resolves the issue and allows me to navigate through the theme panel. I have informed Cloudflare of the conflict and are awaiting their response.

I have no idea what may be causing the conflict but I do know it isn’t Javascript minification, which was already deactivated prior to installing the latest version of the theme. The problem only started after installing the latest theme version and I have tried reinstalling it more than once.

I tried to disable CloudFlare and W3 Total Cache and the problem persists. The problem is not here, what can I do?

fyi, the theme installs a meta field for post views and starts counting once the story is viewed once theme is installed. There is no way for this new data field to count OLD reads from existing content, such as a year ago as the meta field didn’t exist.

On our sites we were using a very old and respected “view counter” and this used the meta field of “views” — so each update we actually have to hack the theme file to change the theme meta field to use our existing views data field.

If you have an existing view counter meta field, you can switch to use that existing field which was counting reads/views (or ‘hits’ as some might call them erroneously).

If no tracking meta field existed in the past – there is no way for the theme to “read” that field to display the number of reads “in the past.”

MORE SPECIFICALLY HOWEVER:
since I don’t use jetpack, and if all your views are stored in jetpack, then obviously the connector needs to ping that datafield stored “in the cloud” on Automattic’s servers where that data lives. But, check your meta (custom fields, if you prefer) for an older post. If there is a data field showing 4,000 reads for that post in your local dbase then all you’d need to do is change the hit counter module to use that existing data field by name and NOT use the one created by the theme.

Ideally – it would be wonderful to have an option to “use existing hit counter data field” option in the admin panel, particularly for a “newspaper” theme where this might be tracked more seriously that a parakeet blog. Or, a custom config file to specify that sort of thing vs hacking the theme each time.

I chose to use Amazon’s CloudFront since I already have Amazon account and they bill my card on file (I think December was $0.98). CloudFront works well, aside from this pesky issue with Font Awesome 4, which I’m getting same issue from boostrapCDN (free) — sometimes the icons won’t load in IE10/11 or Firefox (both on Windows) for no good reason.

Anywayyyyyy….. in my case I’m using S3+CloudFront since my brother’s company (in the educational software business) uses it, a lot of folks have been testing running WP sites virtually entirely in their cloud (!), and I’ve got a nice app called Cloudberry S3 Explorer which works as both bulk FTP, header settings for expirations, ACL/Public settings, and CloudFront invalidations. So, it was just kind of the best choice. Right now only loading CSS, JS, fonts, static images (logos, little things like BBB bug, etc.). Not yet using for WP.

Upshot … I think folks would likely spend the 30-cents vs free to “test” both for speed.

In my case I did test couple of things against CloudFlare and where I’m at there was couple of msec saved, so seemed worth it to just use Amazon since I know they’re not going to disappear, or get bought by Google and squashed or anything else with other cloud stuff might throw out there. I’m also inherently suspicious of anything “free” as that is no business model, and I need reliable here today, here tomorrow setup for our main business site. So, $1 a month to count on it, vs “free” and might be gone without warning. Was easy choice for me.

Haven’t yet done anything with the WP stuff as waiting for Newspaper “3” if it will have classic WP ‘header.php’ file where I can just point a bunch of the CSS/JS stuff at the CDN without hacking something that will then need re-hacking in 2 weeks.

I also did some research on some articles around and since I don’t need SSL off the cloud (after all I have my own damn server!), this was food for thought:

Varnish does wonders! I can vouch for it as I have it on my server and it truly pays off.

Do you know what the advantage of using a CDN like Amazon over CloudFlare is? I’m only using CloudFlare, and for a free service it’s insane how much it does. Not to mention that if your server goes offline, visitors can still access cached pages.

make sure you utilizes the tagDiv speed booster plugin with w3 cache plugin and if possible a CDN solution like cloudflare which bluehost supplies or maxcdn like we use.

I hadn’t upload the same logo in the header online, to avoid to show the problem at all my readers. For this, I made those screenshots.

Howeaver, now you can see the problem online. Same logo on the header and footer, but you can clearly see the difference. The logo on the footer is perfect, that on the header is “cloudly”, not clean.

Hello Marius,

the problem is that the logo (298 x 124), in footer looks well, but in the header, it seems no clean as on the footer, but cloudy. Perhaps, because in the header it is resize automatically? It’s very strange. I would like understand and resolve, this situation.

just a fun thing to try for those who don’t want to go through either Radu’s recommendations for optimization as well as my various notes in this forum, you might try Google’s currently free while in beta (basically it is free now, and may be free for years, or might be free for personal sites in 3 years but paid for commercial purposes)…. upshot you can have Google re-render your pages on the fly with their mod_pagespeed module in the cloud for your website for free:

this same system is used by the various “custom wordpress high speed hosting” companies out there (and I’m literally right now testing it on our new web server!).

If at some point in future Google charges for this, it might be something like $100 per year based on what they charge for their custom search tool for websites.

However, they have a neat tool to compare your site now vs what their system would do for you. Pretty cool stuff, really. An option for those unable to wrangle their own site properly. 🙂

Just fyi on web fonts …
since the fonts are being loaded from Google’s CDN, there isn’t really any way to “optimize” Google’s loading of those fonts in the way some of you may think – how can the theme optimize something living on Google’s CDN ?. Although “technically” one might remove the &ver=3.71. for some very minor compliance in moving away from that kind of versioning data in WP.

How we did it on our static main business site (not running WP except for news and blog areas, but it’s the same concept in how you might “super optimize” YOUR setup), was we downloaded the equiv fonts (Open Sans family), created style sheet, uploaded both CSS and fonts to our own CDN (S3/CloudFront), setup CORS rules, and now load the fonts off of Amazon’s cloud where we could set expiration times of one year, and compress, etc. In our case we did it both to control all the font parameters for PageSpeed and also the whacky bug in IE for not loading the true italic version of fonts off Google’s CDN without manually inserting calls to all font versions one at a time for IE which results in loading 8 font families per page). Using a custom style sheet to load all the fonts, we load just ONE file for the reg/reg italic, bold/bold italic and solve two issues with Open Sans.

For “most” people you need to setup your compression, and time to live (expiration headers) on YOUR end of things before anything else – that is not a function of the theme. Google how to do that, or contact your hosting provider. Then move on to the other stuff. As GZAM pointed out, and as I have previously, the compression and expiration headers alone account for about 20 points or more in Google Page Speed.

Fonts are a tricky bit, where any “designer” fonts, slow down page regardless, as they have to be loaded from somewhere. For those looking for “fastest speed” once everything else is done, you might have to NOT use custom fonts at all, and sub out Trebuchet MS for the menus, and something like Georgia or Arial/Helvetica for the body text.

Spending the $2 a month for Amazon’s CDN (or similar) is one way to speed up your fonts, vs loading them from Google directly, but that is something you need to try, modify, test, modify, test. For example, we use Font Awesome, and we tested loading that off the cloudflare hosted version vs our CDN on Amazon – Amazon was faster so we load that from there.

Not sure if any of that helps. It is a process, not a one click thing to optimize a page for ‘speed’ — there is NO “one click” solution out there due to complexity of servers, content, and everything being loaded on the page.

For example on optimization — if you want faster speed, what about image compression level using built in functions of wordpress? Did you know you can use a plugin or function to increase the compression level of the thumbnails appearing on the pages? Smaller files there make page load faster even before server side gzp/deflate. These are the kinds of things you need to research if trying to optimize your site for fasted load times.

For example, you could set the compression of images to something like 60% or even 50% in your child theme functions.php … will only change level on new images uploaded unless you use the regenerate thumbnails plugin or similar.

I’m not sure what Radu has the quality set to by default, but increasing the compression even 10% from the default improves speed.

Google’s webpagetest.org actually recommends quality level 50 for web images.

We are shooting for “60” at the moment (60/100 compression is not percentage of compression, btw).

What about several user suggestions? I don’t know how to handle some needed feautures such as
– slider gallery of uploaded article pictures (with optional captions) – not jetpack
– implementation of formats with icons for gallery, soundcloud, cite… not only the video template

Waiting for a official implementations or doing this by myself and fix that by every update?
Is it possible or needful to make a list here or somewhere else?
