We use xampp installs for testing, we didn’t tested other tools so i cannot recommend you something else.
First backup the site files and database, in case something goes wrong you just use the backup to restore the site. Usually c-panel comes with an option for this, or you could do this manually – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
You can’t keep the old theme in the same folder, you either delete it an install the new one or move it to another location.

Please disable all plugins, leave only Visual Composer active, also disable any css/js minification, clear cache and purge your files if you use CDN, then check again if you still have this issue. Remove also any custom modification to the code. I also tested this with latest theme version and did not found any issues with it.

I have noticed that the theme is displaying latest articles on pages such as contact us and about us pages. i have not setup these pages with visual composer. They were right from the begining. Have a look at these pages:

This is the same problem I’ve been having since I upgraded and updated. The icons for editing individual blocks are not there. I can only move or delete whole blocks but not edit. Please help. I haven’t been able to use any of the really nice looking homepage templates.
I also have a notice on my dashboard that says: “Important notice: You have an outdated version of Visual Composer Design Options. It is required to review and save it.”
Any help to fix this will be appreciated.
Custom code still works for adding to end of your functions.php file; however this one element might not, with NP 6.1 (not yet tested by myself at least):

Hello latest visual composer active, after updating to Newspaper 6 blocks not showing in background, and even with default page templates not able to edit. For reference screenshot links given below..
tried with database update and without update, same Problem. Also tried with deactivating all plugins expect visual composer.

If I try your solutions, I have still 2 stylesheets (js_composer.css and style.css) which remains at the top of the page.

I could really use some help with the upgrade, my last attempt went fatally wrong and I had to restore the backup files and database. I am running version 4.x (April upgrade). I followed the instructions on your how-to upgrade page.
I turned off all plugins, renamed old theme folder, uploaded new theme 6 folder, ran update script but the settings didn’t get transferred. It was a real mess. I would try and edit the homepage using the Visual Composer.. adding a simple text box but that wouldn’t even show up. I then tried to install the demo with content figuring if that worked I could at least use that as a base but that didn’t work either.
Im afraid to try upgrading it again.

it is not that easy… for example the grid from Newsmag is very special and I’m very happy that it works like it is. I’m sure many people are trying to replicate it but it’s very hard to make it work with visual composer + all the other things (blocks). We are already investigating a new grid system for Newsmag that will be a big improvement. Plus there are many more front end differences.

2. We removed the quotes shortcodes, we use html with classes now. The quotes are not updated by the script, sorry. We tried to add them but on some cases there was a chance for errors to appear an we decided not to include them in the script.

Unfortunately you will need custom work to create a custom page template and display the featured image like you want, not so simple. Theme page template were designed to work with Visual Composer and to display Visual Composer elements.
I suggest to get someone to help you as we cannot provide any type of custom work for the moment, sorry!

The Homepage BG template was removed, so now the Big Slide will not be added automatically to your page.
