Hi!
I have just checked my test site (test.obrazovanie.by) with Newspaper theme on GtMetrix and PageSpeed and was a bit disappointed with low scores and some speed issues reported:
I realize that some speed issues have nothing to do with the theme (e.g. caching or gzip compression). However, some of them might be related to the theme, in my opinion. Could you, please, give some recommendations about how to optimize the following issues found by GTMetrix.
1) Minify CSS
2) Minify html
3) Minify JavaScript
I expect this is not a problem for you since demo page gets high score in the same categories.
What about “Optimize images” issue – I found the guide how to fix it at “Pagespeed guide” page of the documentaions. That would be very nice to have similar guides on issues 1-3 (see above) there.
Kind regards,
Dmitry
Hi SheShopped,
try the following:
– make sure, that all image file names do not have any non-ASCII characters
– turn off caching, I had issues with my hoster (Siteground) Google PageSpeed Option

Johannes

As a note for all reading this….
AMP is initially intended to help speed up loading of NEWS sites/content/posts; and not strictly intended for corporate sites based on “pages” … or ecommerce/shops.
Reason for this is that many more people read a news item each day than visit your staff bio page, from diverse locations and browsers. AMP puts a lot of the heavy lifting on the cloud/browser side so that what loads from site is as little as possible and has some of the features of mod_pagespeed and http/2 baked in among many other optimizations as well as optimizations for https.
Many of the “complaints” about AMP right now are “waaah, why don’t pages work with AMP — you suck!!” — which is ridiculous.
Point being, if you have a busy news site, it’s worth buying into. If you have a corporate site about your law firm, or an ecommerce site selling bunny t-shirts, not so much. 🙂

Hi, Catalin. Thanks for response!
Speed Booster is active: Speed Booster v4.2 – Active
For files .js it worked perfectly. I did exactly as this tutorial but for css files is not working. At least that’s what shows PageSpeed test above.
Hi, i’m sorry but i think the fault is, i’m getting the registered scripts of the dashboard instead of the homepage. I seem to the scripts now. But another problem is the speedboost doesnt seem to work.
Here’s my system status
I deleted the cache content in wp-content > cache
however, pagespeed still shows the render block
here is my code added in speedbooster:
pagespeed seems to return the same renderblock error on the scripts i added. Also the default scripts like jquery etc..
I already tried in different browsers.
Hello.
I inserted the code below on td-speed-booster.php using the IDs functions.php returned me, but when I run pagespeed test again, the css continue there to be optimized.
/**
* here we move the css
*/
function css_mover() {
if ($this->td_theme_name == ‘Newspaper’) {
// wp 011 – Newspaper 6
//$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘bbp-default-bbpress’); //bpress old
//$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘bbp-default’); //bpress
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘google_font_open_sans’);
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘google_font_roboto’);
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘contact-form-7’);
//Rafael
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘sportspress’);
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘wp-polls’);
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘js_composer_front’);
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘sportspress-icons’);
$this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘dashicons’);
Do you know why? For .js I did and worked correctly.

Cloudflare will likely add an exception for /amp/ layer to not “rewrite” that. (You *might* want to poke them about that, as a customer!)
I was worried mod_pagespeed might mess it up, but that worked with no issue.
Hi, as I stated, i already generated the registered script(or render blocks that you are referring). refer from my first post. What I’m asking is their difference. What appears in pagespeed insights, doesn’t appear in the registered scripts.
hi, i’m sorry but im not familiar with wordpress syntax yet. So I need to put it on functions.php right? then how can i reference the js/css that appeared in pagespeed syntax?
Thanks Bogdan! I’ve been able to add it but just making sure that the syntax is $this->move_style_to_footer_queue(‘bp-legacy-css’) & not $this->move_style_to_footer(‘bp-legacy-css’) which is what the tutorial mentions (Tutorial doesn’t mention ‘footer_queue’, but ‘queue’).
Anyway, my file was saved. Do I have to clear cache before checking in Pagespeed (because I just checked & the performance has actually dropped).
Gaurav
Hi, let me clarify. my speedbooster plugin is activated in system status. I already did what you stated. the problem is the code in functions.php … the js and css in pagespeed insights doesn’t appear in the registered scripts generated by functions.php. I can’t get the id of the plugins to be put in speedboost plugin.
Hi, i’m trying to use speedboost to fix render blocking issues,
using your code to put in functions.php this is what I got:

and pagespeed insights…

Notice that those js/css in pagespeed insights does not appear in registered scripts.
Can you guide me on how to fix this?
Hi, Lucian
you don’t need to do anything with the theme at this time, as the plugin being updated by Automattic is theme agnostic and they have the manpower and connections with Google and are keeping it moving forward for their VIP clients (e.g., TIME magazine, etc.).
Newsmag and Newspaper both WORK with the plugin just fine, so at this time nothing theme authors need to “do” as long as nothing being injected into header to “break” the /amp/ functionality.
Example with Newsmag (a few versions back, and not fully optimized due to me messing with mod_pagespeed and trying to move server to https/2 and realizing we need full OS reload, which I’m not quite ready to do yet due to having to offload all sites, update server, then reload sites! UGH!!!)::
So, at this time — I’m “suggesting” you might make this thread a sticky one, and/or add to tutorials as you will be getting a lot of forum posts on this as Google rolls this out ostensibly for March 1.
Nobody “has to do this” — but many folks will “want to do this” — hence my adding this thread so we don’t see 50 posts next month on this same topic 😉
Feel free to “sticky” this for the next week, to lessen the torment.
I had the same problem/question as the topic poster. Switching off Speedbooster solved it. And to my surpise the site speed even went a little up, comparing the speeds in Google PageSpeed Insights before and after.
Hi,
I have checked into this and it seems that chrome on iOS has this issue. It seems it renders a bit slow and that is why the background is visible. It only happens if you scroll fast enough so chrome cannot keep up the pace. (It also happens on our live demo but not so visible as on your website as you have more elements on your webpage and it is heavier on chrome’s renderer) There is a way you can diminish this effect, if you deactivate the smooth scroll from the theme panel :http://screencast.com/t/N9MdKGl1yt
You can also try to disable/enable the lazyload animation as well to see if it has any effect on rendering speed: http://screencast.com/t/9SnvsJFM
Another thing you can do is to increase your page loading speed: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.comics2film.com%2F&tab=mobile
You can follow this guide to see how you can have a better loading time:
https://forum.tagdiv.com/search/faster/
I hope this helps.
Thank you!
SEO Yoast optimization plugin is not for image optimization, is it? With EWWW i increased a lot my pagespeed. Is there any other plugin i can use to optimize images that is compatible with the theme?
Hello Christoph,
Nice job on the pagespeed. It improved quite a bit. And bing agrees on the mobile part now: http://screencast.com/t/ZDVwF3Gs4lHQ
Google can scan your site now as well and return a proper score: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fscreencast.com%2Ft%2FZDVwF3Gs4lHQ&tab=desktop
It seems there are no further issues and page speed is good!
Have a nice day!
You need to edit your pagespeed.conf file to be optimized for your site, caching module, CDN loading, etc.
Are you running mod_pagespeed on your server /VPN, or are you doing that via Cloudflare ?
We have our own dedicated high end server here, so we manage our own stuff and don’t need CDN, so my suggested settings only address the ideal setting AFTER you setup the pagespeed.conf file properly with the Apache module (see the Google docs on how that works).
For instance, if you are running the module on your own server/VPN, and loading stuff off CDN, you have to actually tell mod_pagespeed where those CDN resources *are* — for our test we setup a subdomain as cdn.oursite.ooo which was a CNAME for the CDN bucket.
But again, not theme specific, so likely best to talk to Cloudflare and explain your use of mod_pagespeed and how best to connect. 🙂
Thank you Chris S,
I tried
<IfModule pagespeed_module>
ModPagespeed on
ModPagespeedEnableFilters collapse_whitespace
ModPagespeedEnableFilters remove_comments
ModPagespeedEnableFilters rewrite_images
ModPagespeedEnableFilters insert_dns_prefetch
</IfModule>
this but it increases load time of website
You can find my example mod page speed settings I believe in my long winded tutorial, or someplace in the forum history as we fully enabled this — using WP and Newspaper — back in Jan. 2014.
Note the mod_pagespeed settings should be optimized for WordPress; they are not “theme” specific. There are numerous tutorials online re setting up mod_pagespeed to work with WordPress you may want to look at, going back to late 2013, and mostly in 2014. There is some trial and error.
Upshot, it’s not theme related, but WordPress related.
For example, you should NOT use lazy load, not use minification other than comment removal and spaces removal, and ideally not use things that move scripts to bottom or top of page as theme already does that, as does WP.
Point being there is not one ideal “snapshot” of a config file for every server, and setup.
For example, you may want to put the path to a static folder location. Read docs on how to do that.
You may want to hook mod_pagespeed to connect to caching module on server, but you would need to actually work with your hosting provider to set that up properly.
Using mod_pagespeed with external resources is also tricky, such as CDN, where you need to put in lines to specify how that connects — if using cloudflare they should be able to help you with that.
Again, mod_pagespeed is *not* theme specific, but WordPress and Cloudflare setup should be addressed to the Cloudflare folk.
Hello,
I have a problem with my thumbnails.
As you can see here – http://trucchiesoluzioni.net/soluzioni-94-ecco-le-risposte-a-tutti-i-livelli/ – the thumbnail size is wrong. It happened right after i used EWWW Image Optimizer to optimize media files (to increase pagespeed). Is there any way i can fix this without losing the optimization?
Regards,
Sebastian
Hello,
I have checked your website on multiple platforms and I have to say, there are very strange things I found. Google returns a pagespeed of 100/100 . That is a bit exaggerated. When checking with gtmetrix you get 30% https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.hafawo.at/OdbrBvsV and on w3c validator: https://validator.w3.org/mobile/check?task=2016021708382976.mobile1&docAddr=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hafawo.at%2F
Google seems to be the only one that cannot test your site properly. Please try to disable all plugins except visual composer, clear your cache and reset cdn if you use it. Then check with these tools again. There may be some plugin conflict at work here.
Let us know how it goes.
Thanks.
How is it going?
I have been trying to fix the site speed for a while now and I can not get it over 42 / 100 mobile or 61 / 100 desktop.
I have followed the instruction (pagespeed guide) numerous times – However, the problem I am running into is the FILE NAME is from the PageSpeed Insights page are no where to be found on the txt. file that from section
“5. Remove render blocking css/js – using the TagDiv SpeedBooster plugin”
I have delete plugins – and nothing works – the only reason I got that speed UP to 61 n 42 is because I used CloudFlare..
Can someone please help. Site is http://philadelphialocalbuzz.com/
Hello friends,
Since my site is focused on photography and hence on the site there are many pictures, I decided to optimize the server so that it may yield the best results, the most you’ve got is the next value obtained in pingdom and page speed. I would like your evaluation and any advice if I can improve more. Thank you.
